Shakaylen Barrett had everything going for herself. At twenty-five, she had a career she loved, plans to open her own business, and a family she thought she could always count on. The last thing she expected was for the man she’d trusted her entire life to be the same person responsible for turning it upside down.
A deal made twenty-five years ago has finally come back to collect, and unfortunately for Shakaylen, she’s the price that has to be paid.
Cassian Jefferson is a man who does things his way. He’s successful, demanding, and used to being in control. He doesn’t have time for unnecessary drama, especially when it involves his father’s business. But one unexpected night puts him in the path of a beautiful, smart-mouthed woman who has no problem telling him exactly how she feels.
Shakaylen wants nothing more than to get her life back, and Cassian is determined to keep her out of harm’s way. The problem? She doesn’t trust him, and his controlling ways aren’t making things any easier.
With danger still lurking and an attraction neither of them planned for, Shakaylen finds herself caught between wanting to get as far away from Cassian as possible and wanting to know more about the man behind that demanding attitude.
But when your life has already been promised away, how do you know who you can really trust?
