I looked over at him. “What else would it be?”
“I don't know, ma. That's why I'm asking.”
I shrugged and looked back toward the television. I wasn't trying to start a whole conversation about what had happened because, truthfully, I didn't even know what to think about it myself.
Cassian reached for my hand, and I let him take it.
“Look, Kaylen. I ain't about to sit here and make shit awkward between us. I wanted you, and I enjoyed being with you. But that don't mean I'm expecting you to have everything figured out tonight.”
I turned toward him. That wasn't what I expected him to say.
“Okay.”
“I'm serious, ma. I know you still got your reservations about me.”
“Well, at least you know.”
He laughed. “Yeah, I know. Yo' ass make sure I don't forget, either.”
I couldn't help laughing at that because he wasn't lying.
“But I'm not about to act like tonight didn't happen,” he continued. “And I don't want you feeling like you gotta act different around me because of it.”
I nodded, looking down at our hands. “I hear you.”
“That's all I'm saying.”
For a minute, I sat there thinking about what he'd said. I appreciated that he wasn't trying to force me into having a conversation I wasn't ready for. But that still didn't change the fact that I'd just slept with a man I wasn't completely sure I could trust.
And the craziest part was that I didn't regret being with him.
That was what had me fucked up.
“You wanna finish watching this movie?” he asked.
I looked toward the television and laughed. “Cassian, we done missed the whole damn movie.”
“Shit, we can start it over.”
I shook my head. “You something else.”
He picked up the remote and restarted it while I got comfortable beside him. When he put his arm around me, I leaned against him without thinking twice about it.
I knew I was probably going to have a whole lot of questions for myself in the morning. But right now, I didn't feel like dealing with none of that.
I just wanted to enjoy the rest of my night.

When I woke up the next morning, my body was sore as hell, and I was still trying to wrap my head around what had just happened between me and Cassian last night. I wasn’t expecting any of that shit to happen. Hell, I didn’t even know what had gotten into me, but the fact that I’d actually slept with him still had me shocked as fuck.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed myself, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t questioning my damn judgement. This was the same man I’d been arguing with since the day I met him, and now here I was waking up beside him after the night we’d spent together. I didn’t even know what the hell we were doing, and that was the part that bothered me. I was starting to get comfortable with him, but I still had my reservations, especially after everything my daddy had put me through.
I looked over at Cassian, who was still stretched out on the couch beside me, sleeping like he didn’t have a care in the world. I shook my head before carefully getting up, trying not to wake him. I had to get ready for work, and I already knew I had a few patients scheduled for today. The last thing I needed was to be late because I’d spent half the morning lying around thinking about what happened last night.
Once I made it upstairs, I grabbed my scrubs and headed into the bathroom. Instead of taking my usual hot shower, I turned the water down until it was cold. I wasn’t a fan of cold showers because I loved my water hot as hell, but this morning I needed something to wake my ass up and get my mind together.
After finishing my shower and getting dressed, I headed back downstairs and grabbed my phone. When I checked the time, I realized I was running late as hell.
