I looked up from my desk. I swear, I couldn’t get a damn minute to myself this morning.
“Come in!”
The door opened, and Marlin stepped inside. He was one of my men I’d assigned to look into David and see what the hell he had going on. I had also put him on the black SUV Kaylen told me about after she’d run off that night.
“Yo’ boss man. Got an update for you.” His eyes moved between me and Kendric.
“What’s up?”
“You remember that black SUV you wanted me to look into?”
“Yeah. What about it?”
“Well, word is David got a personal driver who be riding around in a black SUV.”
I sat back in my chair, taking that in. “So you saying David might’ve been in that truck the night Kaylen ran off?”
“It’s possible, but I can’t say for sure. I was out earlier and saw his driver getting out of a black SUV.”
“Was it the same one?”
“That’s what I’m trying to confirm.”
I nodded, thinking back to what Kaylen had told me. She’d said somebody followed her for a while before pulling up beside her and offering her a ride. I hadn’t gotten much of a description out of her that night because I was too pissed about her running off in the first place.
“Aight, hold on. Let me see something.”
I picked up my phone and called Kaylen. It rang a couple of times before she answered.
“Hello?”
“What’s up, shorty? You busy?”
“Not really. Why?”
“I need to ask you something.”
“About what?”
“That night you ran off, you remember that nigga in the black SUV?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“What he look like?”
She was quiet for a second. “Cassian, I already told you it was dark. I couldn’t really see his face.”
“I know that, ma. I’m asking if you remember anything else about him. Anything at all.”
“Um…” she paused. “I remember he had gold in his mouth. Like, when he smiled at me, I could see it shining. That’s really all I could make out.”
“Gold teeth?”
“Yeah. Why? Did you find out who he was?”
“Not yet. I’m having somebody look into it.”
“Okay, but why are you just now asking me about this?”
