He laughed, leaning back against the couch. I finally settled on a movie and placed the remote on the table before getting comfortable.

For a while, neither of us said much. We watched the movie, occasionally making comments about what was happening, and I found myself laughing at some of the shit Cassian was saying. At one point, I shifted on the couch and ended up sitting a little closer to him.

He looked down at me. “You good, ma?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Just asking.”

I nodded and turned my attention back to the television, but after a few minutes, I could feel him looking at me again.

“What?” I asked, turning toward him.

“Nothing.”

“Cassian, why you looking at me?”

“Can't look at you?”

“I ain't say that.”

“Aight, then.”

I shook my head, smiling despite myself. “You get on my nerves.”

“You told me that already.”

“And I'm probably gone tell you again.”

He laughed and stretched his arm across the back of the couch. I looked at him for a second before moving closer and resting against his side.

“You comfortable?” he asked.

“Yeah.”

He settled his arm around me, and I went back to watching the movie. I couldn't even remember the last time I'd sat on the couch with a man like this. My ex and I used to spend time together, but after everything that happened between us, I hadn't been interested in getting close to anybody else.

And now here I was, sitting up under Cassian Jefferson of all people.

The same man who had been getting on my damn nerves since the day we met.

I shook my head at myself.

“What you shaking your head for?” he asked.

“Nothing. Just thinking.”

“About?”

I lifted my head to look at him. “You always gotta know everything?”

“When it comes to you, I like knowing what's going on.”

“Well, ain't nothing going on.”

He looked at me for another second before nodding. “Aight, ma.”

I settled back against him, but my mind wouldn't leave it alone. I knew I was starting to get comfortable around Cassian, and that scared me a little. Not because he'd done anything tonight to make me feel that way, but because I still hadn't figured out what the hell we were doing.
