“I will.” She nods solemnly.
“It doesn't feel right staying out here,” Granny says.
“Trust us.” Archer stares at her until she huffs and turns away. “Rome.”
We walk into the back, and Archer waits until they join us. He shuts the door, locks it, and guides me toward the far wall.
“Are you sure?” I whisper.
“I’m done playing,” he says roughly, moving close. “I found Mara for Rome. Doing a spell to find Griffon will be easy. Somehow he knows your magic, but he doesn’t know mine.” He lays his hands on my shoulders and dips his head. “I’m going to spell you. It won’t restrict your magic, and you can break it if you need to.”
“Okay.”
He closes his eyes, drags his hands down my arms, and then steps back. Raising his head, he opens his eyes, and I gasp. Magic fills the air, and I can see it swirling in his eyes. He holds his palms toward me, and a black mist floats toward me. It surrounds me, circling, covering me. My body feels warm, and my spells react, eager to feel his power. I can see clearly through his shield, and I’m in awe of my soul bond.
He finishes his spell and moves back, giving me a heated look before joining Rome in the middle of the room.
I feel safe as if nothing can touch me. A thrill shoots through me.
Archer has been hiding his anger, and what he can do.
I’m excited to see how he will channel it.
Chapter Seventeen
Archer
Stepping in front of Rome, I roll my shoulders, ready to find the asshole. Savy may seem like she isn’t worried, but her encounter with Griffon flustered her. There are too many secrets about the warlock, and I don’t want to wait any longer.
“Ready, Brother?”
I exhale. “Ready.”
“I’ll let you guide us.”
We grip each other’s forearms, bow our heads, and call on our magic. Doing a spell with Rome comes naturally. We have done countless ones over the years. He knows I'm capable, but if he senses I’m in trouble, he'll step in. I can project what I’m seeing directly into his head, so we don't need eye contact. I hope to do the same with Savy.
Find Griffon. Now.
My skin vibrates as Rome releases his power. I ease mine out to join him, and a vision makes me jerk.
Betty and Travis are running through a wooded area, frantically looking over their shoulders. Fear bleeds from their auras, and they stumble over branches. I float above them and look around. I can’t tell where they are, but it’s close.
Travis is panting and holding his side. As Betty falls, he hisses and curses at her. I don’t think he’s going to help her, but after continuing to run a few yards, he comes back. He yanks her up by the arm, and they continue.
The vision isn’t of the present. A fog hovers around the edges of the frame as if I’m watching a movie of the past. My spell is showing me Griffon’s memory.
Fast forward.
The screen in my mind flips, speeding through their frantic attempt at escape. I can feel the glee that Griffon is experiencing. He doesn’t care about them. They were a tool he used to get what he wanted. It changes, and I see them on their knees, pleading with their captor. Griffon’s laugh echoes through the trees. Manic. Demented.
I look down and see the knife made out of ice that he holds. His magic pulses along the blade, making it glow. I see it coming, but I can’t look away.
How do I tell Savy that her parents are dead?
Griffon leaves them bleeding on the grass.
Present. Show me what he sees.
