With that settled, Rutger went home. Having a cell phone was good for some things, and he liked it for when he had to talk business with Brew, but some things had to be taken care of in person.

Katie worked until the rain started to come down. She loved to be out in the rain when it was warm. Getting her tools gathered up, she was able to make it to the car before the clouds opened up. When it did, it was a great downpour.

Waiting for the rain to stop at least enough for her to drive and not wreck, she watched as the mud drained away from the trees that she’d only just planted and hoped that they’d survive the rain until tomorrow. She didn’t want them to wash away.

“What are you doing, love?” Smiling, she told Rutger that she was getting ready to leave the parking lot. “Be careful. There are downed trees everywhere, so go slow.”

“I will. It’s warm out too. I love this kind of rainstorm. So long as I’m someplace safe when they go through.” She decided that the weather wasn’t going to get any better, so she started the truck and got going. The rain was really coming down, and she was careful of the streams going across the road. “Will you be having dinner with me? I’m not too terribly hungry. I’ve had a big lunch today and so can eat a little later in the evening.”

“Nay, I shall watch you. There are some things that need to be taken care of with Brew. He has some houses that he’s going to be bringing down soon. There are nests and homeless people in them, and he wants to nip that in the bud now rather than when they have the building fall in on them.” She said that she’d seen the construction crew come into town today. “That would be them. He said he was going to get right on it, so I guess he did. He’s having trouble with a few things going on around his area.”

“I’ve heard from Kimber that she’s been working a great deal for him. I think she enjoys helping Brew. They get along really well.” He said he thought that they did too. “I’m almost home. Let me concentrate on driving, and I’ll be home in less than ten minutes.”

“All right. Just be careful.” She promised that she would and closed the connection. It was easy to talk to him this way, without having to use her hands, but it was also dangerous because she had to use a part of her mind.

Noticing all the trees and branches that were down, she was extra careful about driving in streams going across the road as well. She didn’t want to have an accident this close to home, so she drove well under the speed limit and was careful going under trees.

When she pulled into the driveway, Rutger was there waiting for her. She hurried into the house and kissed him as soon as he handed her a towel. The rain was really coming down now, and she was soaked through when she got into the house.

After changing into something more comfy, she went to the living room with Rutger. He was lying on the couch, and she sat down at the bottom where his feet were. As soon as she sat down, he pulled her toward him with his hands and across his body. She lay there for several minutes waiting for him to say something.

“I want you.” She said that she wanted him as well. “Good. I need to feed from you, and then I’m going to fuck you. Or make love, whichever you wish.”

“I want to be made love to if you don’t mind?” He kissed her gently on the forehead, then on the mouth. “You’ve been teasing me for several days now. Why all of a sudden do you want me?”

“I forever want you. You’re my life.” She snuggled down closer to him and held onto his chest. “You’ve had a good day; I’m taking it. No one tried to kidnap you or anything?”

“No. Just worked all day. I think I actually got more done today than I did last week. The weather was perfect, and I wanted to get the trees in. Also, some of the bushes that the family ordered. I’d like to plant some holly bushes around our house if you’d not mind. They’re so beautiful with their dark green leaves.” He agreed with her. “Also, there are some flowering bushes that I love too that I’d like to get put around the barn. They grow pretty fast, and that would make the barn look a little better.”

“It needs to be painted soon. It’s beginning to look a little worn around the outside. The inside is all right but the out…well, it looks like it could use some work.”

“I’ll call someone in to do that before it gets too cold.” They both agreed that would be the best thing, and she laid her head back on his chest. “I’m off tomorrow. I have that doctor’s appointment in the morning, and I took the rest of the day off in case they wanted blood work or something.”

“You’re seeing the doctor for our kind, correct?” Katie said that she’d made the appointment last week and they were able to get her in tomorrow. “Good. If you don’t mind, I’ll go with you. It’ll be fun to see my old friend again. He’s been the doctor around here since before Brew was born. I think he might even have delivered Brew. I don’t know about that, but I know that he’s an ancient. But he does go to classes every year or so to keep up with the medical field. He’s a good doctor and a better friend.”

“I’ve only spoken to his office people. They said that he was going to be off for a month in the next few weeks to go to some kind of refresher classes. I’m glad that he’s not going to be one of those doctors that are set in their ways. Is he mated?” He said that he had a lovely wife and several children that are older. “Good. Hopefully he’s understanding of humans that are mated to vampires. I hope so anyway.”

“He’s delivered all kinds of children. I know that he is sometimes used for the pack around here. Especially when there are complications with the pregnancy. Donald is a good man. I think you’ll like him.” She knew that she would simply because he was friends with Rutger. “Also, you should be aware that he has his own hospital out on his land that he delivers babies in. I don’t know that he does anything else, but he does do that when necessary. As I said, he’s a good doctor.”

“I can’t wait to meet him. He’ll be able to deliver all the babies of this kiss.” She frowned a little and asked him what it was. “What is a kiss anyway? I’ve heard the word used, but I never really thought about asking what it is before.”

“It’s a group of vampires that live either in the same area or household. A nest is also what is called a group of just vampires. We all have mates, so we’re a kiss. Nests are what you call a bunch of baby vampires that are making more of their kind. It’s against the law to make a vampire before you’re two years old. They figure by then that you’re mature enough to tell them how it’s going to be and that you won’t allow them to get out of hand. It’s been happening a great deal of late, with new vampires making babies, and Brew has had to go out and take care of them, but he’s going to make it a law that is punishable by death if you make one before your change date. That’s another reason that he’s taking down the empty houses that are in bad shape. To keep them from using them to stay out of the sun. In fact, he’s going to go out and take care of a nest tomorrow afternoon so that he can have a talk with them.”

“Do you think it will do any good?” He said that Brew had made a good point about talking to them, but he didn’t know. He was just going to stay out of it until needed. “Good. I like that idea. That way you won’t get hurt when they try to stop you from killing them. I’m guessing that’s what he normally does. Kill them, I mean.”

“Yes. It’s faster than letting them go around killing people. Baby vampires don’t last all that long when made by a baby. They also don’t know about the rules governing them. It’s important that they know the laws before they get themselves killed.” He rolled her to her back. “What do you say we make love? I’ve missed having you around while you’re working. You work too much.”

“I was thinking the same thing today. I want to go down to part time. That won’t be hard since I think they believe I’m going to be quitting soon anyway. I don’t want to quit, but I do want to work less. I miss you a great deal.” She pulled him down for a kiss and was satisfied when he kissed her back. “You need to feed from me so that I can come. I don’t care about anything else but coming right now.”

“A bit selfish, aren’t we?” He kissed her throat and then made his way to her mouth. “You taste like you’re fresh as a daisy for me. I love you.”

“And I love you.” They kissed and necked a bit on the couch. It was too small for what she had in mind, so she got up to help him off the couch. “Let’s go up to the bedroom and see what sort of things we can get into.”

“Great idea.” She waited on the stairs while he locked up the house. Taking off her T-shirt, she was nearly naked by the time they got up the stairs. As soon as they were in the bedroom, he willed himself as naked as she was, and they got into bed. She knew that he was going to make love to her; it was something that she wanted, but she didn’t know what to expect when he didn’t touch her for several minutes.

“I’m thinking about what I want to do to you.” She let out a long breath and moved closer to him. “You’re making it difficult to think when you’re that close. I’m going to feed from you, then I’m going to fuck you gently.”
