I kept my hands at my sides.
“Who sent you? Do you know Mireya?”
Her expression changed, only slightly, but enough, and my stomach dropped.
“You do,” I whispered.
“Elowen, please. We can explain everything once you are away from here.”
“Who’s we?”
“There is no time.”
She glanced towards the door again, her anxiety growing stronger.
“You do not understand. You are in danger here. They will come for you.”
“Who will?”
I shook my head. “You keep saying they and we, but you won’t tell me who anyone is.”
“I cannot tell you here.”
I reached for my bracelet. “That’s fine. I’ll call my husbands, and they can come with us.”
“No. We cannot involve Stormforge. They will prevent you from leaving.” She moved closer. “Please. I can return you to your world, but you must come now. You may never have another opportunity to return to C-17.”
“C-17? What’s C-17?”
She went completely still.
“Is that Earth?”
“Elowen—”
“What is C-17?”
“We must go.”
She gestured towards the small window in the side wall. I looked at it, then back at her.
She wanted me to climb through a bathroom window with a stranger, leave my guard behind and go somewhere she still refused to name.
“No.”
“You must.”
She reached for my wrist, and I pulled it away.
“Don’t!”
Her hand stopped between us.
She still tried to keep her voice gentle, but her scent was thick with desperation now.
God, I wanted to trust her.
“Come with me,” she whispered.
