Sam threw a pack of wipes into one of the baskets.

“Talking about, ‘Not now, Sam. I’m tired.’”

I looked at Avery.

She was suddenly very interested in folding that onesie.

“Maybe he was tired,” I said.

“He always fucking tired when I want to do something.”

My cousin was so good to a nigga that ain’t even deserve it.

That was the part I tried not to think about.

Because Samantha wasn’t some horrible wife Xay ran away from.

She wasn’t mean to him.

Wasn’t cheating on him.

Still wanted the nigga.

Still packed his lunches.

Still talked about him like she loved him even when she was calling him every name except the one his mother gave him.

And there I sat carrying his fucking son.

Bottom-barrel bullshit.

A tightness wrapped around the bottom of my stomach.

I stopped.

Breathed.

Sam noticed immediately.

“That’s one?”

“Yeah.”

She looked at the clock on my wall.

“Don’t.”

“I’m just looking.”

“Stop timing my pussy.”

Avery busted out laughing.

“Nobody timing your pussy!”

“That’s basically what she’s doing.”

The pressure eased.
