I exhaled.
“See? Braxton Hicks.”
Sam gave me a look.
“Okay.”
We went back to work.
The washing machine upstairs stopped.
Dishwasher kept humming.
Avery started opening another package of diapers while Sam went into the kitchen to check the bottles.
I looked at Avery again.
She looked at me.
This time she spoke first.
“Why you keep looking at me?”
“Why you keep noticing?”
“Because you’re fucking staring.”
I smiled.
Before I could answer, another pain tightened across my stomach.
Harder.
“Oh.”
Avery’s face changed.
“What?”
I put my hand underneath my stomach.
“Nothing.”
Sam came back into the room.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Avery pointed at me.
“She just made a face.”
“Traitor.”
Sam looked at the clock again.
“That wasn’t that long.”
