Friends or not, I was probably going to see them as competition right now, and I fucking hated that.

It was caveman bullshit, but I couldn’t seem to stop my primal thoughts when it came to Jenna.

“I’d like to come,” Jenna said brightly. “Will Sara be there?”

Nate nodded at her. “She’s off tonight. I’m going to swing by her place and pick her up.”

I forced myself to relax as my friends exited my house one by one.

The minute they were gone, I closed the door and pressed Jenna’s back against the wall.

I caged her in with my arms and kissed her, tasting her gorgeous lips possessively.

I wanted this woman more than I wanted to take my next breath.

For her, I could be patient, but I was bound to tip toward the edge every so often.

I almost groaned in satisfaction as her hands gripped my biceps and she eagerly returned the greedy embrace.

She wanted me.

She needed me.

I was pacified.

For now.

Chapter 16

Jenna

“You’re looking at Brock like you want to strip him naked and devour him whole,” Sara observed drily later that evening. “That level of lust is a little scary, Jenna.”

I took my eyes off Brock and the rest of the team at the island in Gage’s kitchen.

Sara and I had taken up residence on the sofa in the family room, which gave us a good view of the men sitting as close as possible to the pizza.

“Is it really that bad?” I asked as I focused on Sara.

The two of us had clicked from the beginning. Strangely, I felt like we’d been friends for years.

“It’s pretty obvious, but maybe that’s because he looks at you the same way. The chemistry between you two is crazy hot,” she said as she jokingly fanned herself.

I nodded. “So hot it’s uncomfortable. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way about a guy before. I wouldn’t believe it was possible if it wasn’t happening to me.”

“Enjoy it,” she advised. “It’s pretty rare to find that kind of chemistry.”

I sent her a questioning look. “You look at Nate the same way. I don’t understand why you two aren’t a couple.”

A brief look of something that looked a little like panic crossed her face before she answered, “It’s complicated. I’m physically attracted to Nate, but it’s nothing serious.”

I didn’t buy that it couldn’t be serious, but I sensed that there was more to Sara’s story than she wanted to share.

She’d been in Cherry Cove for a few years, but she wasn’t a native.

Nobody really knew where she’d come from or why she’d wanted to move here in the first place.

She was sweet, kind, and affectionate, but for some reason, she just didn’t talk about her past.
