Satisfied she had everything she needed, she placed the bag into her suitcase and zipped it up. She was about to drag it off the bed, when a warm hand closed over hers, and Damon’s familiar pine scent surrounded her.

“I’ve got it.” His voice was low and sent shivers down her spine. She imagined him using that voice on her before he possessed her with his body.

Margot shut down those thoughts quicker than a flash of lightning. Not going to happen, no matter how much she wanted it to. No matter the touches he now freely gave her. Or how secure she felt when his arms enclosed her in a tight embrace.

“Thanks.” She kept her back to him and gave her bedroom one last scan to see if there was anything else she missed.

When would she come back and sleep in her own bed?

How had her little unit that she took so much pride in, become a place where it wasn’t hers anymore?

Anger flared inside her. Some asshole decided that it was fun to threaten her. If they were coming from the person she’d caught a glimpse of the day Camille was shot, then they were being an idiot, because there was no way she’d recognize them. They could walk past her in the street, and she wouldn’t give them a second look. That’s how much she saw of them.

“This is so unfair,” she ground out. “I’m upending my life because of someone who thinks I saw them when I didn’t.”

“We don’t know that it’s related to the day Camille was shot.” Damon came up behind her and gently turned her around. “Even if it is, you’re right, they’re an asshole, and we’ll find them, and they’ll pay for threatening your peace and well-being.”

“That’s great, and all, but in the meantime, I have to leave my home and put you at an inconvenience.” She gave a firm nod as she came to a decision. “I think the best thing is for me to go to a hotel.”

Damon’s brown eyes darkened until they were almost black. “Not happening, so don’t even mention it again.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but he placed a finger over her lips. “I mean it, Meg. You’re coming home with me, and that’s it. Now let’s go.”

He didn’t wait for her, he turned and headed for her front door. Margot was sure that he wouldn’t leave, not without her being close behind him.

Honestly, she had no idea why she even blurted out that she wanted to be taken to a hotel, because that really was the last place she wanted to be. If she’d gone to one, the chances of her sleeping and relaxing would be slim. Not to mention there weren’t many hotels in Perth that had kitchen facilities, and she didn’t want to waste money on eating out all the time.

Flicking the light switch off, she met Damon at the door. “Okay, let’s go.”

“I know this isn’t an ideal situation, but we’re going to make the most of it.” He touched her cheek gently, and opened the front door, indicating for her to leave before him. “Can I have your keys please?”

Margot rolled her eyes. He may have thought he sounded nice and gentle asking for her keys, but he still sounded terse. “You don’t trust me to lock my own door?”

“I do, I just want to do it.”

There really was no point arguing with him because she wouldn’t win, and she didn’t want to stand on her doorstep and argue with him. “Fine.” She slapped the keys in his hand and waited beside him while he did the absolutely simple job of locking her door.

God save her from overbearing, alpha men. No matter how sexy he was or how safe he felt.

“Thank you,” he said quietly, and handed them back to her.

Silently they walked to her car and popped her suitcase and the bags of food in the back.

“Going on a holiday, Margot?”

She smiled up at her neighbor who lived on the opposite side of the fence from her in another lot of units. “Hi Ivan, how are you?”

“Good. You heading off on a holiday?” he asked again, just as a young woman’s head popped up beside him. She smiled and waved at Margot, which Margot returned.

“Something like that,” she murmured, not wanting to let him know what was going on. They’d dated a couple of times after he moved in the previous year. He was nice, and they’d had a good time, but when she caught him flirting with another woman, while on a date with her, she declined his next invitation after calling him out on what he’d done. He hadn’t been angry, and since then, they spoke whenever they saw each other. Not to mention Ivan had been dating, Tatum, the lovely woman at his side for the last six months.

Margot was aware of Damon standing behind her, and she imagined he was probably sending death glares to Ivan. If he was, it wasn’t bothering her neighbor at all as he and Tatum’s expressions hadn’t changed. “Have a great time. You need me to collect your mail?”

“Thanks, but I’ve got it sorted. One of the guys I work with will collect it, right Damon?” She smiled cheekily at him.

“Yep. We need to go if you’re going to make your flight.” Of course, Damon wouldn’t have any problems keeping up with her little white lie. He’d probably lied so many times while on an assignment.

“Bye.”
