He held her gaze, needing her to see the truth in his soul. That the words weren’t just empty promises. That they were a vow. His vow to her.
After a few seconds she nodded quickly. “Okay.”
Chapter
Eleven
Normally, when she pulled up to her unit, a sense of peace always befell Margot. Today was different. Today she worried that someone was hiding behind the wall that protected the front of her home. The wall that gave her a sense of privacy, and safety. One that she’d never given another thought about. Until now.
She looked in her rearview mirror, seeking the reassurance that Damon had pulled in behind her. His big SUV took up a bit of the driveway, and normally, she’d get out to unlock her garage and pull her car into the carport, but given she was only going to be there long enough to pack a few things, she didn’t bother.
Damon had also asked her to wait for him to get out of his car before she did. At the time, she’d bristled, but hadn’t said anything to him, just gave him a terse nod before getting into hers.
Now, thoughts were running through her mind about who or what could be lurking behind the wall. She could see clearly that there was no one there, and that should’ve appeased her mind, but it didn’t.
A light tap on the window had her jumping a little, but she plastered a smile on her face and grabbed her bag before getting out.
“Are you okay?” he asked, studying her a bit too intensely for her liking, something she found him doing a lot of now.
“Fine. Just waiting like you wanted me to.” She glanced toward the garden bed that abutted the wall. It hadn’t mattered that from her car nothing could be seen and no one lurked behind the low bushes, she still checked.
Damon, clocking her action, looked around too. “Is something out of place?”
“No.” She shook her head. “It’s… nothing.” She headed to her front door and unlocked it. She was about to step over the threshold when Damon halted her progress. Now it was her turn to look quizzically at him.
“Let me check it out first.”
“Okay.” She stepped back, and he brushed past her, his fingers trailing against hers as he went.
She waited by the open door, ready to run to her car if she had to. Given that her unit wasn’t huge, Damon was back fairly quickly.
“All clear.”
She blew out a breath in relief, even though she believed her unit was empty. “Thanks. I won’t be long.”
Margot went straight to the spare room to grab a suitcase, and wheeled it to her bedroom.
She didn’t know how long she was going to be at Damon’s. His announcement of her new living arrangements had been met with nods of approval from his friends and Steve. Although, her boss had asked if this was something she wanted to do. That had been her opportunity to ask if she could stay with him and Tabitha, but she hadn’t. All she’d said was yes, she was fine with it. Steve had studied her the way Damon did, only it didn’t set her on fire like when she was the subject of Damon’s gaze.
In the end he’d given a nod, but she’d caught him talking intensely to Damon.
“What did Steve say to you?” she asked, as she walked out of her bedroom, expecting to find Damon sitting on her couch—only her living room was empty. “Damon?”
His head popped out of the kitchen. “Steve didn’t say anything to me.”
“He did, because I saw him talking to you after you told everyone what was happening.”
“Oh, nothing really, just work stuff.” He lifted up a bag. “I’m putting some of the things from your fridge in here. You don’t want it going off and then coming home to a smelly fridge.”
Not for a second did she believe they had been discussing anything work related, but she would give him a pass and question him later. As for what he was doing right at that moment, she hadn’t given a thought about emptying her fridge. “Right. Thanks. That’s a good idea. You might want to check the cupboard. I have potatoes in a bag down at the bottom.”
“On it.”
Margot watched him for a couple more seconds before shaking her head and going back to her bedroom. This was another facet to Damon that she hadn’t seen before. One that was endearing, and the total opposite of the intense man she also thought of him as.
Sexy and intense.
She quickly pushed those thoughts away and concentrated on making sure she had everything she wanted to take with her. Going into the bathroom, she collected the toiletries she needed along with her contraceptive pills. If she didn’t have those, she’d be laid up every month with horrendous pain. The very idea of going through that in front of Damon wasn’t something she wanted to do. Then again, she’d thrown up in front of the man, so if he hadn’t been turned off by that, he would be by seeing her lying in bed with a hot water bottle on her belly for two days.
