“See ya, Margot. Have a good time.” Tatum just waved again.
“I plan to.”
They disappeared behind the fence, and a second later she heard his door shutting. “Right. Let’s go,” she said as she opened her car door, quickly shutting it before Damon could say anything.
A few seconds later, she heard the rev of his engine and blew out a breath. Not for one minute did she think that Damon would let the subject go. The questions would come when they got to his place. Whether she answered them was a different matter. Damon didn’t have to know everything about her life.
There were some things she wanted to keep to herself, and her personal life was one of them.
Chapter
Twelve
The meat sauce bubbled nicely, and the spaghetti pasta was almost cooked. Damon checked the oven for the garlic bread he’d put in and saw it was a golden brown on top.
“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do to help? I feel like I should be doing something considering you opened your home to me.” Margot sat at his breakfast bar, a glass of sparkling rosé in front of her.
There was no way he was going to tell her that he’d gone and gotten a bottle of it after their failed dinner. Even now, he wasn’t sure why he’d purchased it. Now, he was glad for whatever urge had pushed him to do it. After the upheaval of the last few hours, she needed to relax. Which was why he insisted on cooking.
“It’s almost done. And really I had planned to cook this tonight, so it wasn’t as if I’ve done anything special.” The garlic bread was an extra he wouldn’t have heated up if it had just been him. He’d found it in the freezer, and after checking the best by date because he couldn’t recall when he’d purchased it, he added it to their meal.
“How about setting the table? I can do that. Show me where everything is.”
Knowing that she wouldn’t be happy unless she was doing something, he pointed to the drawer behind him. “You’ll find the cutlery there, and in the drawer below will be the plates, and pasta bowls are in the one next to it.”
He was aware of her moving behind him, and he resisted the urge to reach for her and kiss her. Brand her as his own. Ever since her neighbor had talked to her he’d been wanting to claim her even more than he had before. Which was ridiculous. Margot wasn’t a piece of property to be owned. She was an independent woman.
Where these caveman actions were coming from, he had no idea. If he even showed them to her, she would likely run, and he didn’t want that.
He’d never had a woman stay at his house, let alone cook a meal for one.
“Okay, that’s done. Are you sure there’s nothing else you want me to do? I can make a salad if you want?”
“Do you want one?” he countered, because whenever he ate spaghetti, he never bothered with a salad. If Margot wanted some greens, then he was more than happy to eat some.
“I don’t usually have one when I make spaghetti myself, but I thought you might want something healthy.” For some reason, color bloomed in her cheeks.
He laughed, not at her, but because of how she basically said his thoughts out loud.
“I didn’t think I said anything funny,” she grumbled, and crossed her arms over her chest, drawing his attention to the way her shirt molded her full breasts. He clutched the spoon a little tighter, quelling the urge to close the distance between them, and cupping them to feel their weight.
“You didn’t.” Even to his own ears, his voice sounded low and husky. He placed the spoon on the plate he kept beside the cooktop, and closed the gap between them.
A lock of hair fell over her face, and he caught it between his fingers, rubbing the silky soft strands before he tucked it behind her ear.
Margot looked up at him from beneath her lashes, and what he was about to say was forgotten, as the need to taste her overwhelmed him.
Dinner was forgotten.
All that mattered was the woman in front of him. Her pink tongue darted out to swipe across her bottom, tempting him even more.
“Meg,” he whispered his nickname for her, and shuffled a little closer to her. Her hands came up and rested on his chest, immediately igniting the desire licking at his soul.
Margot lifted her chin and leaned into him. He wanted more though. He needed her words. To hear her say this was what she wanted.
“Yes?” he questioned, not needing to elaborate.
“Yes.”
