Chapter One

Cash

There was silence following my announcement, before Vannah got up and walked away. I followed after her knowing that it was going to result in the argument I didn’t want to have earlier. She headed for the walking trail that was off the campsite. I didn’t say anything as I followed her. We walked for about ten minutes before she turned to look at me.

“When were you going to tell me?”

“I didn’t want to say anything before it became official. I didn’t want to jinx anything.”

“I call bullshit on that, Cash. We have been together for how long? You have never not told me anything!”

“Doesn’t that go both ways?”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You have been weird with me for weeks now.”

“How? I have barely seen you. You come home late, leave early. Even today when you were supposed to be off, you still went into work.”

“I know and I am sorry for that, I am, but I needed to put in the hours to get this. I also couldn’t chance Bianca running back to LA before coming clean about what they did.” Running my hands through my hair, I let out a breath. “Sug, this promotion is going to do big things for us. I won’t have to work shifts anymore so I can be home with you. I won’t have to work weekends unless there are cases I need to work on, but even then, I can work from home. If I told you and it didn’t happen, then I would feel like I had disappointed you. We should be getting married and starting a family. We can’t do that if I am working all the time.” I moved closer to her. Reaching out, I cupped her cheek.

“I stuck by you through the academy, what makes you think that I wouldn’t this time?” When she looked up at me, I could see the pain in her eyes.

“I knew you would but the thought of letting you down kills me.”

“I would have said that you could never do that but keeping secrets from me… We don’t do that with each other.”

“Sug, I’m sorry. I know I can’t take that back, but I can promise not to keep things from you again.”

“I don’t know, Cash, I really don’t know.” She pulled away, turning her back to me. This couldn’t be the end for us. I wasn’t about to let that happen. I had fucked up by not telling her everything from the beginning, but we could get past that… Couldn’t we?

“We can get through this, don’t give up on us. Promise me we can fix this.” Savannah was quiet for a few minutes. I could hear noises around us, footsteps crunching on the gravel not far from us as I watched her, waiting for her to say something. Anything. I just needed to know we would be okay and that I hadn’t fucked things up. If we didn’t have trust, then what did we have?

“Cash, I’m pregnant.” I blinked and took a step back. I was expecting a lot of things to come out of her mouth but that wasn’t one of them.

“Want to run that past me again? You’re what?” She turned to look at me, tears running down her cheeks.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I know I should have told you. I have no right to be mad at you about keeping secrets or up on my high horse when I have been doing the same thing, but that is why I have been so weird lately. You haven’t been home and I was scared that I was losing you. We have been together a long time, you’re right, but what’s to stop you getting bored?”

“What’s stopping me?” I closed the distance between us and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close to me. “I love you and have done since the first day I met you. You keep me on my toes on a daily basis. There has never been a boring moment with us. Why would that change?” Savannah put her head on my chest.

“I don’t know.”

I stepped back so that I could look into her eyes. Cupping my hands around her neck.

“I’m not going anywhere. You are stuck with me until the day I die, a long time from now. We’ll get through anything as long as we stop keeping stuff from each other.”

“I promise, no more secrets from you. I don’t want to say anything to anyone about the baby just yet, is that okay?”

“If that’s what you want, I will support you on that.” She nodded. I wrapped my arm around her again, pulling her close. “Come on, let’s go back to the others before they come looking for bloodshed.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for, Sug, we are all good.” Pressing my lips against her head, I rubbed her back and just soaked in that moment, just the two of us.

After a little bit of holding her in my arms, I turned and we headed back toward camp. I didn’t care what happened now, as long as Savannah and I were good. She was the one constant in my life that had never wavered, and to think she thought I was getting bored made me realize that I needed to show her I was still as in love with her today as I was back then. We did need to think about setting a date soon. If she wanted to get married before the baby was born or after, I was fine either way. I was gonna be a dad. Holy fuck. The thought just hit me like a ton of bricks. We were gonna be parents. Shit.

“You okay?”
