Amelia leaned towards Reese and they were in each other’s arms again. Reese stroked her sister’s hair.

“I’m sorry that you feel like you were abandoned, but Mom tried to save you and she probably did. My childhood with Aldo was horrible. If it wasn’t for Killian, and if I didn’t get rescued from the forced marriage Aldo had arranged for me, I may have been dead by now.”

Amelia couldn’t stop crying and all I wanted to do was console her. This shit was heavy. It was tougher than anything I’d ever faced or heard. Amelia glanced at me, almost like she was looking for my support but I had none to give her.

I’d never be able to forgive her. No matter what her story was.

Something flipped in Amelia right before my eyes and I hadn’t expected it. She looked up at me with her eyelashes wet and her cheeks streaked and red.

“You have to make him pay. You’re going to make him pay, right?” she said.

I looked into Amelia’s deep blue eyes, she was almost too beautiful to resist. I wouldn’t be able to resist her at all. I stepped towards her but stopped myself in time.

“What did you tell him about us?” I asked.

“Nothing. I didn’t tell him anything. I told you, Nolan…I changed my mind about helping him after I met you. I told him I was working on it, but that your family hadn’t given me any information.”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket.

“So we have to act now while he’s still at that location.”

“We had an argument. I asked him too many questions and refused to answer his. So he may already be suspicious that I know more than I told him. So yes, you have to act fast.”

“Reese, I want you to stay here with Amelia,” I said.

Reese smiled and reached for her sister’s hand. “Happily,” she replied.

I dialed Colin’s number and he answered quickly.

“You speak to her? You got her?” he asked.

“You were right about everything. Amelia is the mole,” I replied.

I knew Reese and Amelia heard every word of the conversation but I didn’t give a shit. I wanted Amelia to hear. I wanted her to know it hadn’t changed anything. She was still spoiled goods in my eyes.

“Okay, you going to do something ‘bout it or should I?” Colin growled.

“Right now you need to gather everybody you can get your hands on because we’re going to bring this war to an end.”

“You figured out where Aldo is?”

“I know exactly where he is. Make the calls and I’ll text you a location.”

The call ended and I turned to the girls.

“I don’t know how long I’ll be gone, but I’m going to send someone to keep watch over here.” I spoke to Reese but I was actually speaking to Amelia. I didn’t trust her and I wanted her to know that she shouldn’t try something stupid.

This wasn’t over yet.

Twenty-Five

Amelia

Nolan was about to leave but I knew I needed to speak to him before then. I didn’t know how long he’d be gone or what would happen at the end of this. There were some things I needed to say to him.

I followed him to the door, leaving Reese sitting on the couch, staring after us.

“Nolan, please, just hear me out before you go,” I tried.

He opened the door, turning to face me. His green eyes had a magnetic effect on me. I was paralyzed to the spot, my feet were frozen to the ground. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get the words out even though I wanted to say them so badly. I wanted to tell him how I felt.

It wasn’t an act.

“I’m sorry. I know you don’t want to hear this, you don’t want to believe me and I hate myself for everything that’s happened. I know you shouldn’t forgive me…”

“Then why are you talking to me right now?” he snapped.

His eyes were darker and stormier than I’d ever seen them before. I wanted to step closer to him but I couldn’t. I wanted to touch him one more time if he’d let me.

“I just want you to understand that I never would’ve betrayed you or tried to deceive you if I knew the truth. He played me and I fell for it, like a fool. I was so desperate for human connection. And I guess…I was drawn to him. Now that I know he’s my biological father, there must have been some switch that flipped in me. It was like my soul just knew who he was.”

It didn’t look like Nolan was actually interested in my excuses. He was in a hurry to go. Time was of the essence, and I delayed him.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I just want you to give me the opportunity to talk when you get back.”
