Wes’s frown tightened. “Do all of the units in that building come with keys like the one we found?”
“No. Standard, high-end locks and keys. But nothing specialty.”
“We should go visit the condo,” she said.
Dean’s eyebrows arched.
“Not a chance in hell, sweetness.”
“Why not? It’s my key. Ryan was going to give it to you. If we have it, and if it works in the door, then we should be able to go in.” She didn’t think Wes’s frown could sink any lower. “We’ll just take a quick look.”
“No matter how fast you go, the law wouldn’t agree with you.”
“You’re not an FBI agent anymore, Wes.”
“That doesn’t change the fact that trespassing is against the law.”
Dean leaned back in his chair. “Maybe you two need to have this conversation without a witness.”
Wes scowled. “You’re not helping.”
“We can go tomorrow,” she said.
Dean pretended to cover his ears. “Don’t tell me. But I’ll send you everything I’ve found out about the place, and if you need anything while you’re traveling in that area, let me know. I’ll see what I can do.”
“You’re an asshole,” Wes muttered.
Dean grinned. “At your service.”
She and Wes left Dean’s lair. Wes grumbled the entire drive from his office to Magnolia Boulevard. He didn’t stop until they reached the makeshift office. Wes sat at the table and pushed back on two legs. “If we’re going to do this…”
She took the chair across from him. “We are.”
“Then we need rules.”
“I’m okay with rules.”
“You don’t go anywhere without me.”
“That’s a given. If we go later this week, I can arrange a playdate with one of Matt’s friends. Mary Lacey can handle that while we’re in DC, then we’ll drive back here in the evening like we did before.”
Tension flicked in his jaw.
“You don’t like my plan?”
“Not really.”
She pushed out of her chair and moved to the corner of the table. “You’re awfully cute when you’re unhappy with me.”
His forehead furrowed. “I’m not unhappy with you. Just this whole shit show.”
She really wanted to crawl into his arms and, for just a little while, forget about everything they were investigating. “Do you know one of the most frustrating complications that comes with dating a single mom?”
Wes gave her his full attention. “What’s that?”
“We don’t get a lot of alone time.”
Wes leaned forward. His chair legs returned to the ground. The creases across his forehead disappeared as she suddenly changed the topic. “I noticed that. Not complaining. But…definitely noticed.”
