“You okay?” Cain asked, his voice shivering through me.

“Yeah.” There was no logical reason for my voice to sound so breathless. Nothing except the press of his chest to my breasts, the feel of his strong arm around me, his fingers digging into my hip.

“We could get back on the trail,” he said, pulling me a little closer. “Or…”

“Or?” I asked, my voice an exhale.

His head ducked, his forehead brushing mine for a second as if waiting for me to pull away.

But my hands slid up his arms instead.

My face angled up.

Taking that as the permission it was, he closed the distance.

His lips found mine with purpose, angling, and drawing a soft, aching sound from deep inside me.

And I just… melted.

Everything in me went liquid, pooled.

My arms wrapped around the back of his neck, holding on, pressing my body tightly to his, dragging a groan out of Cain.

The kiss ebbed and flowed, gentle one moment, insistent the next. And I was swept away with it.

Cain’s hand slid to the back of my neck, fingers massaging, dragging a soft moan out of me.

But it was right then that the speakers let out a bloodcurdling shriek that had me gasping and yanking away, my heart pounding for an entirely new reason.

“It’s okay. Just the prerecorded soundtrack,” he reminded me.

I felt oddly comforted by how short of breath he sounded. It made me feel less like a freak.

A couple walked past us then, sniping at each other since, it seemed, when an actor ran at them, he threw her at him and tried to run away.

That was a pretty good mood killer.

Without a word, we stepped back onto the path and made our way through the rest of the woods.

On the other end, we found ourselves walking back toward the lot with a large crowd of teens, making a private conversation impossible.

“Still on for dinner?” he asked as he placed the helmet on my head.

I wasn’t hungry at all.

“Yes.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

Cain

I figured that Georgie already had her fair share of fancy meals that she had to get dressed up for and performed at. So I’d opted to go casual for our meal after the trip through the haunted woods.

Since we’d already had pizza at the clubhouse the other night, I figured you couldn’t really go wrong with Mexican. And something told me that her asshole ex was not the kind of guy who would go to some independent restaurant where you could get genuine Mexican food.

So that was where I took her.

All the way down the highway and over the bridge until we were walking through the front patio of a little hidden gem I’d discovered soon after joining up with the Henchmen.
