“Very impressive,” I tell them. “I think we’re going to get along brilliantly.”

Halfway through art time, I notice Aspen is still watching me carefully.

She participates when I give instructions and speaks quietly to Annie, but the stuffed crab hasn’t left her arms.

I understand.

New people take time.

I crouch beside her desk, leaving enough space between us that she doesn’t feel crowded.

“Hey, Aspen,” I say softly. “I love your crab. Does he have a name?”

Aspen looks up at me with big cobalt-blue eyes.

“His name is Beachy,” she answers. “My daddy bought him for me.”

“That’s a great name.” I smile at the stuffed crab. “Hello, Beachy.”

Aspen holds him out slightly, allowing me to see him properly.

“He comes with me when things change,” she explains.

Something in my chest pulls.

“Is he helping with the new-teacher nerves?” I ask.

Aspen nods before hugging Beachy against herself again.

“How about he sits on your desk for today?” I suggest. “That way, he can watch over you while you paint.”

Her eyes brighten. “Really?”

“Absolutely. But he needs to promise not to steal anyone’s crayons.”

Aspen looks down at him. “He only likes blue ones.”

“Then we’ll keep a close eye on the blue crayons.”

A tiny laugh slips out of her.

She places Beachy in the corner of her desk, positioning him so he’s facing her painting.

“Is that better?” I ask.

“Yes, thank you, Miss Morgan,” she replies.

“You’re welcome, Aspen.”

As I stand, I notice her shoulders have relaxed.

It isn’t a breakthrough. I haven’t magically erased her nerves.

But it’s a start.
