Mehun nodded and ordered her team to withdraw.
“Keep the Family Wing secure,” I added.
“Yes, Director.”
Elowen flinched at their movement and pulled the blankets over the rest of her face. I opened the bond, letting her fear reach me as I sent an urgent message to Leon and Caius.
Darius: Return at once. Elowen is in severe distress.
Leon: On my way.
Caius: Understood. Remain with her.
“They have gone, sweet Omega.”
Elowen peered over the blankets. “You gave me to them. You gave me to the people who want my babies.”
“They were ensuring your safety. They meant no harm.”
“Liar!” she hissed. “You told me you would protect me, and you let them near me, near my babies. Stay back!”
A tone sounded in my implant. “Director, Physician Vale requests immediate access to Lady Stormforge. He insists it is urgent.”
“Thaddeus is coming. He will help you and the girls.”
“No! He’s not taking my babies.”
“No one is taking them, sweet Omega. He will only make certain you are all well.” I backed away from the nest and opened the doors.
Thaddeus entered with one other physician while the rest of his team remained beyond the threshold. He stopped in the middle of the room, his empty hands held where Elowen could see them.
“Elowen, I have come to help you. I know you are frightened—”
“No. Please.” She covered her face again. “Darius, make him go away.”
“There is blood on the sheets, Physician Vale,” Eira said softly.
“No,” I whispered. I had scented blood, but I had mistaken it for what remained on my boots.
Thaddeus came to me and switched to Kottarsht.
“She is at immediate risk of a seizure. Both babies are deteriorating, and the bleeding may be caused by a placental separation. We need to stabilise her and deliver. We cannot wait for her to settle.”
His eyes moved towards the corner. “We must sedate her immediately. I can administer it through her monitoring device.”
“Do it.” I turned towards her, keeping my distance from the nest. “Elowen, you and the babies are unwell. Thaddeus will help you. You will fall asleep, and when you wake, all will be well.”
Keeping my voice steady took more effort than I would ever admit. She shook her head, and the fear and betrayal coming through the bond almost undid me.
“No. You said you’d protect me.”
“I am trying to keep you alive.”
Her eyes fixed on mine, and I held myself still as her fear gave way to a hurt I could barely bear.
“You’re a liar.” Her voice broke. “I hate… you.”
I kept looking at her as she fought to stay awake. I took a step towards the nest as soon as her eyes closed, but Thaddeus stopped me.
