He fastened it around my wrist, and when I touched the crystal, Alaric, Caius, Lucien, Leon and Darius appeared in a faint display above it.

“You can exchange images, recordings and documents.”

“Can I message everyone at once?”

“There is a collective channel for emergency communication.”

I flicked through the display, but all I could find were their individual names. “How do I get to the group chat?”

“Group chat?”

“The collective…” I made a vague motion over the screen. “Channel.”

Darius took my wrist and touched a small symbol at the edge of the display. All five names appeared together.

“You can open it directly from the main screen. In an emergency, it will reach the entire Pack.”

“Oh, that’s clever. How do I take pictures?”

He showed me another control, then walked me through taking photos, recording, and attaching them to a message. I tried everything he explained, and I was quite pleased with how much the tiny crystal could actually do.

Once I thought I had it, I lifted my wrist, angled the screen towards myself and smiled.

“What are you doing?”

“Testing it.”

I adjusted the angle, took a photograph and typed beneath it.

Elowen: First official message on our Pack channel. Have a wonderful morning, everyone!

Darius looked down at his own bracelet.

“That is the emergency channel.”

“I know! We need to give it a better name.”

Elowen: We should change the channel’s name! I propose ‘Team Stormforge’

“This channel is intended for urgent messages.”

“I’m sure you can create another one, right? It’s nice being able to talk to everyone together.”

I headed away from the nest, and he fell into step beside me.

Ada met us before we’d exited the corridor.

“Master Darius, Lady Elowen. Miss Eira Vale has arrived.”

“Thank you,” Darius said.

“Who’s that?” I asked once Ada went away.

“Leon arranged for her to assist you. She’ll serve as your companion and help you settle into life in High Mountain.”

We reached the family sitting room before I could ask anything else.

A young woman stood near the windows in a simple blue-grey dress. She looked a little older than me, with warm brown skin and dark hair pinned neatly at the back of her head. She inclined her head as we entered.
