I look down.

My cardigan pocket?

His nose twitches again.

“No.”

His eyes return to mine.

“You cannot possibly smell that.”

Another twitch.

“Oh, for Goddess' sake.”

I reach into my pocket. Yes, I have a candy bar.

Don't judge me.

Some women carry lipstick. Some carry emergency sewing kits.

I carry chocolate.

Newsflash: Chubby girl here.

We come prepared.

Also, Back to School Night is three hours long, and faculty-room cookies disappear approximately four minutes after they're put on the table.

Emergency chocolate is simply good planning.

The Wolf's attention locks onto the candy bar.

I laugh despite myself.

“Seriously?”

His tail moves.

Once.

My mouth falls open.

“Did you just wag your tail at me?”

Obviously, he doesn’t answer, but I swear there's something in those eyes.

Amusement? No. That's impossible.

Probably.

I pull the candy bar all the way out of my pocket. Then stop.

“Wait. Can Wolves eat chocolate?”

He takes another step towards me.

“That's not an answer.”
