Chapter One

Something is moving beneath the trees.

Something big.

Really big.

My first thought is bear. After all, this is New Jersey. Bears have been known to dwell here.

My second thought is that I really should have paid more attention during that faculty seminar on potentially dangerous Shifter encounters.

My third thought is that Dora is going to kill me if I get eaten behind the gym.

Which is ridiculous.

I mean, obviously, if I'm eaten, I'll already be dead.

But somehow, Dora will find a way.

“Dora Troy: Best Friend, Witch, Defier of Death.”

I can see the headlines now.

Another branch cracks.

I stop breathing.

A hulking black figure emerges from the shadows on all fours.

I instinctively take a step backward.

It takes one forward.

“Oh, shit.”

The words slip out before I can stop them.

Not very professor-like.

But I'm currently alone in the dark with something large enough to eat one of my students, so I think professionalism can take the night off.

Moonlight spills through the trees.

One enormous paw appears.

Then another.

Black fur gleams silver beneath the full moon.

Pointed ears.

Long snout.

Massive shoulders.

And eyes fixed directly on me.

Wolf.
