Well.
Not really.
My mouth does that stupid little polite thing women have probably been doing since the beginning of time when they want a man to please leave them the hell alone without making him angry.
Coach takes it as encouragement. He pulls out his phone. Mine vibrates beneath the table.
I already know he texted me. Still, I look.
COACH WILLIAMS:
Dinner tonight. My place.
Not a question this time.
My skin prickles.
I flip my phone facedown.
It vibrates again.
Don't look.
I look.
COACH WILLIAMS:
You've been putting me off long enough, Maggie.
My stomach drops.
Maggie.
I hate that he calls me that. I've corrected him dozens of times.
My name is Aggie.
He knows that.
At this point, it feels deliberate.
Like my actual name is just one more boundary he doesn't think applies to him.
Another vibration.
COACH WILLIAMS:
Don't make me come over there and convince you. ;-)
The winking face somehow makes it worse.
I stare at the message.
He's joking.
Obviously.
Probably.
