“And I think you should go.”

For a second, something ugly flashes across his face.

Then it's gone. He smiles. And I realize I liked the ugly look better.

“Fine.”

He backs away. His gaze drops to the Wolf.

“But keep that thing away from me.”

The growl starts again. Coach points.

“I'm serious. I see it threatening anybody on Academy property, I'm calling Supernatural Wildlife. Let them figure out what to do with it.”

My hand tightens in thick black fur.

“You don't need to do that.”

“Then keep it under control.”

“I told you, he's not feral.”

Coach looks between us. The Wolf is pressed against my legs. My hand is buried in his fur. His enormous body is positioned squarely between me and Coach Williams.

Yeah.

Okay.

Not exactly helping my argument.

“Could've fooled me.”

Then Coach turns and walks away.

I wait.

Ten steps.

Twenty.

Until he disappears around the far side of the Academy. Only then do I breathe.

“Asshole.”

The Wolf huffs. I look down.

“Don't judge me. That was stressful.”

He turns toward me. The scary snarling beast disappears almost instantly.

His ears come up.

His expression changes.

And then—

His nose goes straight for my tote.
