Tonight, it's not quiet.

I feel it the second I step farther away from the gym. A tiny spark races over my skin. Then another.

I rub my arms.

“Great.”

Of course, tonight would be weird.

I tilt my head back. And I groan.

Full moon.

Naturally.

A huge silver moon hangs over the Academy, bright enough to cast shadows across the lawn. Full moons and magic go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

Except considerably more dangerous.

Every Witch knows that.

Magic gets stronger. Shifters get twitchier. Teenagers get stupider.

That last one might not technically be magical, but after years of teaching, I stand by it.

“Randall! Evangeline!”

I wait. Still nothing.

“If I find you two making out, I swear I'm assigning detention!”

The threat leaves my mouth before I can stop it. I grimace.

Great.

Now, if I find them making out, I'll actually have to assign detention.

Confrontation and paperwork.

Fantastic.

Something rustles in the trees. I stop.

“Randall?”

Another rustle. My pulse skips.

“Evangeline?”

No answer.

The magic in the air crackles again. Stronger this time.

The tiny hairs along my arms stand on end. I stare toward the copse of trees behind the gym.

The darkness beneath them suddenly seems a whole lot darker.

And for the first time tonight, I forget all about my missing students.
