On her husband’s son.

My smile slipped for half a second.

Sam didn’t notice.

She turned back toward the cart.

“I’m so fucking tired of men.”

I looked at her.

“What Xay do?”

“Exist.”

I laughed. “That’s enough.”

“No, bitch, I’m serious.” She grabbed some napkins off the shelf. “And he barely fucks me anymore.”

My fingers tightened around the cart handle.

“What?”

“And when he do, the shit be mid.”

I almost laughed, but nothing about that shit was funny.

Not when I knew exactly where some of his energy was going.

Sam rolled her eyes.

“I done bought lingerie. Asked this nigga what he likes. Tried to switch shit up. He keep telling me I’m his ‘good wife.’”

She deepened her voice.

“‘You don’t need to do all that, Sam.’”

I looked away.

Because Xay had never told me that.

Never told me to be good.

Never told me not to do something.

Sam tossed the napkins into the cart.

“I’m thirty-two years old. I got four kids. I work my fucking ass off. I wanna get nasty too, shit.”

I forced out a laugh.

“Maybe talk to him.”

“I have.”

She shrugged.

“Whatever. Enough about my raggedy-ass husband. We supposed to be shopping for you.”
