“Thank you.”
“You welcome.”
“Still don’t know shit about hair.”
“Man, fuck you.”
She laughed and went back to messing with it.
Avery was sitting on the couch with Serenity stretched across her chest. She was two years younger than Sam and looked nothing like her to me. Sam was brown-skinned while Avery was lighter, redbone with freckles across her face and big curly hair she’d pulled up tonight. Both of them were thick, though. That apparently ran in the fucking family.
I knew that better than anybody.
I caught myself looking too long and went back to my phone before Samantha turned around.
“Ave, Serenity already ate. There’s another bottle in the fridge if she gets hungry. Michael needs to be in bed by eight-thirty because if he stay up too late, he gonna be an asshole tomorrow. Zion can stay up until nine since they don’t have school, and please watch Amari because she’ll eat every piece of candy she get if you let her.”
Avery sucked her teeth. “Sam.”
“What?”
“I have watched your children before.”
“I know.”
“So why you giving me an employee orientation?”
“Because y’all don’t listen.”
“Girl, goodbye.”
“And Michael already had juice, so don’t give him no more.”
“Samantha!”
“All right!”
Sam turned back toward the mirror.
Touched her hair.
Frowned again.
“Nah.”
I already knew.
“What?”
“I’m going to Nesha.”
“Now?”
“Yes, now. She only two houses down. She told me come over and she’ll fix it.”
I looked at the time. “We supposed to be leaving.”
“Exactly, which is why you need to get dressed.”
