The front door opened before he could answer.
A woman came in holding a little boy’s hand.
I immediately put my work face back on.
“Hi. Checking in?”
“Yes. Marcus Bennett for twelve-thirty.”
I clicked into the schedule.
“Got him. You can have a seat. They’ll call you shortly.”
“Thank you.”
“No problem.”
She walked away with her son.
I waited until they were seated before looking back at Xay.
“Go home.”
“I asked you something.”
“And I told you we’re not talking about this here.”
“You ain’t answering because you fucking him.”
I stared at him.
“And if I am?”
His face tightened.
I almost laughed.
“Why you making that face?”
“What face?”
“That jealous-ass face.”
“I ain’t jealous of that nigga.”
“Then why the fuck are you at my job asking me about him?”
“I came to see you.”
“No, you came to bother me.”
“I can’t check on you?”
“Check on Carter.”
“Avery, you been ignoring me.”
“And?”
