I stepped closer.

“Where the fuck were you?”

Xay stared at me for a few seconds before he sucked his teeth again.

“Samantha, I don’t need this shit right now.”

Then this nigga turned and started walking away from me.

Oh.

Absolutely the fuck not.

“Nigga, you left my motherfucking son on the side of the road waiting!”

He stopped.

“What the fuck do you mean you don’t need this shit right now?”

“I said I fucked up!”

“And I’m asking you where the fuck you were!”

“I told you—”

“No, you lied!”

I followed him into the living room.

“You told me work ran late. Then you told me you were leaving work when I called you. So which fucking one is it?”

Xay dragged his hand down his face.

“Sam—”

“No. Don’t Sam me. Zion was standing outside waiting for you.”

“He wasn’t on the fucking side of the road.”

“Oh, excuse the fuck outta me. He was standing outside his practice waiting on his father who said he was coming to get him. Is that better?”

“I forgot, aight?”

I stared at him.

“You forgot?”

“Yes!”

“You forgot your fucking child?”

“Man, I got a lot of shit going on!”

“So do I!”

My voice bounced through the apartment.

“Four kids, a job, this house, appointments, school, practices, groceries, dinner, laundry—my whole fucking life is shit I got going on, Xavier. When the fuck do I get to forget one of our kids?”
