Xay looked at me.

Then toward the stairs.

“Shit.”

“Yeah. Shit.”

“I lost track of time.”

“Doing what?”

He looked back at me.

“What?”

“Where the fuck were you at?”

“Sam—”

“No. Don’t Sam me. Zion called me from practice because his father wasn’t there. I had Serenity bundled up, Michael with one fucking shoe on, Amari getting dressed, about to drag three kids outside because you couldn’t do the ONE thing I asked you to do.”

“I said I lost track of time.”

“WHERE?”

His jaw tightened.

And there it was.

That little pause.

I knew Xay.

Nine years.

I knew when that nigga was searching for an answer.

What I didn’t know was that the real answer was sitting in a house in East Orange with milk stains on her sports bra and his newborn son sleeping somewhere nearby.

All I knew was my husband couldn’t tell me where the fuck he’d been.

Levin leaned against the wall.

Quiet.

Watching.

Xay glanced at him.

“Why you still here?”

I looked at Xay.

Oh.

So we were doing that.

Levin’s face didn’t change.
