“Maybe. I don’t know.” I can’t explain the doubt I feel. Griffon isn’t attacking. If he wanted to hurt Savy, wouldn’t he waste no time? “He knows where she is, but waits. Adeline had the vision at the bookstore, yet she didn’t mention that I was there. I haven’t left Savy alone, and I don’t plan to, so where am I? What if something happens that I can’t be with her?” I rub my hand over my hair. “The thought bugs me. I need you to promise me to take care of her if something does go wrong.”

“It won’t,” he grits out.

“Rome, please.”

“Fine, I promise, but nothing is going to take you away from her.”

“I’ll do anything I can to stay safe. I don’t want to leave her for any reason.” My heart hurts just imagining it.

“I know what it’s like,” he says, tilting his head. “All these new emotions are affecting you in ways you never thought. She appears in your life, and it’s hard to keep up with all you're feeling. It'll even out once you bond. Our magic assures us that they're meant to be in our lives. Trust Savy, and the bond. Things will work out. We’ll deal with Griffon and whoever else wants to interfere with your relationship.”

“Thanks, Brother. I needed that.”

“I know. That’s why I showed up this morning.”

“Bullshit,” I grumble, and hear the shower turn off. “Are you going to continue to interrupt us after we bond?”

“How many times did you do it?”

I swipe my hand in the air and seal his mouth shut. “You get one more time.”

He rolls his eyes and cancels my spell. “Fine.”

“I lost track of how many times you spelled my mouth shut, so expect more,” I point out, moving around the counter.

“Ahh…quality time,” he smirks.

“Sure, we can call it that.”

I give him shit, but we would do anything for each other. Which is why I know he'll keep his promise and take care of Savy if I can’t.

“Can I feed him?” Mateo asks.

“No,” Lace says, petting the owl.

“Does he come to work with you a lot?” He tilts his head, creeping closer to the chair the bird is perched on.

“Almost never.” She slaps Mateo’s hand as he tries to touch him. “He’s agitated. I opened the car door this morning, and he flew in. I lifted him out three times, but he wouldn’t stay. I gave up.”

Brushing my palm over Savy’s hair, I stare at the owl, and she leans closer against my side. Mara is sitting on Rome’s lap on the couch. We gathered in Lace’s area, closed the store, and are waiting for Aria to return with food. Gwen is not answering her phone, and Savy is anxious.

Adeline may be right; the owl can sense something. His head is twitching, his focus shifting constantly. I wish he could talk, so we didn’t have to guess his motives.

“He’s never acted like this,” Mara mentions.

“It’s an omen,” Mateo whispers, backing away.

“Are you scared?” Savy asks, grinning.

“We probably should be,” he mumbles.

“He would never hurt us.” Lace glares at him. “He’s a protector. If he wanted to come along, he had a reason. It could be that he missed hanging out with me.”

“Sure, that’s it.” Mateo rolls his eyes.

“Mateo,” Savy calls, and he turns to her. “Can you call Granny? I still can’t reach her.”

“I tried earlier,” he says, but takes out his phone. “Don’t worry, if she doesn’t answer, I’ll do a spell.”
