Then Henry said, “There is something else. I have already spoken to your father, and he has given us his blessing.”

Sarah stared at him in surprise.

“You have spoken to Papa already?”

“I have. I thought it best to ask him before I came to you. I told him about the conversation I overheard between you and Anne, and how sad you both were at the thought of being separated before your wedding.”

“Oh, Henry!”

“And I had an idea. Since Anne and Matthew must marry before they leave, why should we not have a double wedding? We could be married on the same day, before they go. Anne could be beside you, and you could be beside her. I thought it might make the whole business of their departure a little easier for everyone.”

For a moment Sarah could only look at him.

“A double wedding?”

“If you would like it. I have spoken to your father about that as well, and he thinks it is a very good idea. Of course, we should have to arrange everything quickly, but I believe it can be done.”

Sarah clasped both his hands.

“Oh, Henry, it is the most wonderful idea! Anne will be so happy. She has been trying not to let her sadness spoil her own happiness, but I know how much it troubles her. To be married together—to have her beside me after all—I can hardly believe it!”

Henry smiled at her delight.

“Then you agree?”

“Agree? I could not wish for anything better!”

She threw her arms around him, and he held her close, as happy as she was.

“I am glad,” he murmured. “I thought you would like it.”

“I love it. I love you!”

“And I love you, Sarah.”

They remained together for another moment before Sarah drew back, her face bright with excitement.

“We must tell Anne at once!”

“That was my thought exactly.”

Anne was seated near the window when they entered, and she looked up in surprise at the sight of Sarah’s flushed cheeks and Henry’s unmistakable happiness.

“What has happened?”

Sarah could hardly contain herself.

“Anne, I have the most wonderful news!”

Anne rose at once. “What is it?”

Sarah looked at Henry, who gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

“Henry has asked me to marry him,” she announced, “and I have accepted!”

Anne gave a cry of delight and hurried forward to embrace her friend.

“Oh, Sarah! I am so happy for you!”
