CALLE

“The truth does not change the past. It changes what we are willing to do about it.”

—James Sinclair

“Willow!”

The phone remains silent.

I stare at the dark screen as though I can force my sister’s voice to return.

“Call her back,” Storm demands.

“I am.”

My fingers shake so badly I press the wrong name.

Ben takes the phone from me and calls Willow.

The call rings once.

Then goes to voicemail.

He tries Ivy.

No answer.

Hazel.

Nothing.

“Because the deputies moved them away from their phones,” Keating says. “That’s what they were trained to do.”

Gunfire at the beach house.

My sisters trapped inside.

The same men who killed our father coming after another generation of Sinclairs.

Ben blocks me.

“Move.”

“No.”

“My sisters need me.”

“They need you to stay here and let the sheriff’s department protect them.”

“I can’t stand here while someone shoots at them.”
