I wrap his arm around my shoulders.

“We’ll go together.”

We reach the ambulance as Captain Marquez is being loaded into another one.

He lifts his hand.

“Calle.”

I stop.

The medics allow me to approach the stretcher.

His face is gray from blood loss, but his eyes are clear.

“You have James’s compass?”

“The real one is safe.”

“Good.”

“Robert said Dad left a film.”

“He did.”

“Where is it?”

Captain Marquez looks beyond me toward the bay.

Toward the broken remains of the Argent Star.

Then his gaze returns to mine.

“Your father told me not to give it to you until Blackwater was closed and the men responsible could no longer reach your family.”

“Simon and Donald are in custody.”

“They aren’t the only ones.”

A chill moves through me.

“Who else?”

“I don’t know all their names. That’s why Daniel made the film.”

“Where did you hide it?”

Captain Marquez reaches beneath his torn shirt and pulls a thin chain over his head.

A small brass key hangs from it.

He presses it into my hand.

“Your father didn’t hide the film in the compass.”

“I know.”

“He hid the location.”
