“I don’t know.”

“Wrong answer.”

Marcus looks toward the body camera.

“He watches all five sisters.”

“But Calle is the one he’s concerned about.”

“She has James’s compass.”

My fingers close around the empty chain at my throat. The compass remains sealed inside the Coast Guard evidence room.

“What makes mine more important?” I ask.

Marcus studies me through the screen.

“James gave each of you a piece of Daniel’s evidence. Calle’s compass tells Simon where Daniel hid the original.”

The room goes silent.

“What original?” Marquez asks.

“The complete roll of film.”

Thomas rises from his chair.

“That’s impossible.”

Marcus turns toward him.

“James told you he divided it, didn’t he?”

“Yes.”

“He lied.”

Thomas shakes his head. “James destroyed the negatives after making the five frames.”

“No. He made copies.”

“How do you know?”

“Simon found the receipt from the photo lab.”

Ivy’s confusion mirrors mine.

“Grandpa wouldn’t take evidence like that to a public photo lab.”

“He didn’t. Daniel developed the film himself inside Blackwater.”

“Dad knew how to develop photographs,” Ivy says. “He taught me when I was little.”

Marcus nods.

“Daniel made two sets. He carried one out in the Leica. He hid the other before he left.”

“Inside Blackwater?” I ask.
