The sound is filled with tears, fury and relief.
“You can’t open it.”
Simon pulls the key free.
“I have time.”
“No,” Marquez says. “You don’t.”
Sirens rise through Hazel’s security feed.
Additional police vehicles surround her building.
Simon looks toward the bedroom window.
Ben’s voice becomes cold.
“You wanted us to start chasing you.”
He walks through Blue Lantern toward the dock.
“Now run.”
Simon lifts the trunk, but it is too heavy to carry quickly.
He abandons it beside the bed.
Before leaving, he leans close to the security camera.
“Calle, ask your mother why Daniel went to Blackwater that night.”
Mom makes a broken sound behind me.
Simon smiles again.
“He wasn’t trying to stop Donald Cross.”
The bedroom door closes behind him.
“What does that mean?” I ask Mom.
She stares at the empty room on the screen.
“Mom?”
Her eyes fill with tears.
“Your father went to Blackwater because of me.”
The sirens grow louder.
Mom presses one hand against her mouth.
“I was supposed to be on the Mariner’s Crown that night.”
