We spent the next hour lost in the rhythm of it, the sharp, witty back-and-forth that felt less like a date and more like a discovery. We found a mutual addiction to honey cakes from a tiny bakery in Westcourt and a shared love for the way Ebonvale looks when the fog rolls in off the docks. Lucien was sharper than I’d expected, his mind moving with a feline grace that matched his body. Yet beneath the polite conversation, a dangerous current hummed, a vibration in the air that tasted like ozone and expensive wine. It was the same energy that had filled my shop, but here, in the restaurant's dim light, it felt more focused.

As he spoke, the ambient light in the room seemed to bend around him, and for a fleeting second, my witch-sight bled through my normal vision. His aura was a violent storm of midnight-blue and jagged crimson, pulsing with dangerous secrets and raw, unyielding power. I forced myself to blink, snapping the sight shut before he could notice the sudden knowledge of his past in my eyes, but the glimpse was enough to make my blood run cold.

His foot slid against my calf under the table, hot and deliberate. Every brush of his fingers and every glance was a calculated strike, designed to unravel me piece by piece. I found myself mirrored in his gaze, matching his smile while my heart hammered against my ribs. Heat coiled low in my belly, sparking each time our knees touched. By the time the dessert plates were cleared, my skin buzzed. The delicious ache was becoming unbearable, winding tighter with every second.

He stood. So, I did too. We were too close. The space between us snapped taut and dangerous. Then Lucien moved. In front of everyone—servers, diners, the entire glittering crowd—he slid an arm around my waist and pulled me flush against him. His breath hit my neck, hot and deliberate, sending shivers racing down my spine. His lips grazed my ear. “Your place, or mine?”

Penthouse Tension

“Yours,” I whispered, barely audible, my pulse racing faster than my words.

Lucien’s smirk deepened. He paid the bill without ceremony, the subtle elegance of his movements making my stomach flutter. Outside, his Porsche GTS3 gleamed under the city lights. He opened the door for me, his hand brushing mine as I slid in.

“Hold on, Ivy,” he murmured as he placed my hand lightly on his thigh. “You’re safe with me.”

My breath hitched. The city blurred past as he weaved in and out of traffic. The thrill of speed, combined with the heat of being so close to him, left my stomach spinning. Safe? I’ve never felt more dangerous in my life… and yet so alive.

The car finally slowed, plunging into the shadows of the underground parking garage beneath a towering skyscraper of imposing glass and cold steel. As he parked the car into his reserved space, Lucien’s gaze snapped to mine, dark and utterly predatory.

“The second this engine cuts out,” he growled, his voice a low, gravelly promise that vibrated right through my bones, “you’re fucking mine.”

A shiver went straight down my spine, hot and demanding. I didn't flinch. Instead, I leaned slightly across the console, my eyes locked onto his. “Then stop the car, Lucien. Bring it.”

The engine died instantly. Lucien moved like lightning, throwing his door open and rounding the hood before I could even unbuckle. He ripped my door open, his hands locking onto my waist as he hauled me out. In a fraction of a second, I was pressed hard against the cool, smooth surface of the Porsche, his heavy frame crowding me, trapping me completely.

He didn't ask. He just took. His mouth crashed into mine with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole the breath straight from my lungs and turned my knees to water. My thoughts tumbled, hot and scattered. He was all heat and strength and fire as his hand slid down, tracing the curve of my waist with deliberate slowness, gripping my hip to anchor me against him.

We didn't break apart so much as migrate, his lips never fully leaving mine as he guided me blindly backward toward the private elevator. The doors parted with a soft chime, and he poured me inside, pinning me straight back against the mirrored panel.

As the elevator began its smooth, silent ascent, the glass walls revealed the sprawl of Ebonvale’s night lights far below, but I couldn't look. The polished steel and mirrors reflected nothing but the absolute heat in his eyes. His breath mingled with mine, our foreheads nearly touching for one ragged second before his fingers skimmed my curves, bunching the hem of my dress to draw it higher. A soft, breathless sound escaped me. Catching a glimpse of my reflection—flushed cheeks, curls wild—I barely recognised the hungry woman staring back. Holy hell. The scent of him—spice, smoke, and something darker—filled my lungs until I thought I might drown.

The elevator chimed, and as the doors slid open onto his penthouse, the air between us crackled with unspoken promise. Lucien guided me out, staying close behind. My nerves spiked as his lips brushed my shoulder and his hand trailed down my arm.

So, this is how a devil lives.

The space was breathtaking, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the black river, sleek lines of obsidian and steel softened by scattered amber light. It was a predator’s lair dressed as luxury.

My heart hammered, every nerve alight. He lowered his voice to almost a growl. “You’re mine tonight, Violet. Every inch.”

My breath caught and my body answered before my mind could. I leaned in, closing the last inches between us, my fingers curling lightly into his shirt. Mine? Heat pooled through me. Yes. I’d been craving this, despite knowing it was dangerous.

He chuckled softly, a low, husky sound, pulling me closer without breaking the tension. “Leave the heels on for me,” he murmured, and I shuddered as anticipation, curiosity and desire coursed through my veins.

I sensed there was something more to him than magic alone. A secret tucked tight beneath his charm that I wanted to see and feel. Lucien’s gaze never left me. Every brush of his hand, every whispered word, made my heart race faster. I melted against him, lost in anticipation and the knowledge that this night could change everything.

I took a steadying breath and forced myself to remember who he is… what I am. But gods, the way he looked at me made my body ignore every warning. I dared a sidelong glance at him and felt his restraint as if he was holding back something dark… something caged inside. What was he hiding from me? On instinct, I brushed my wrist, feeling for the bracelet that held the ward magic. The faint thrum reassured me. I’m not helpless.

But then Lucien leaned close, his breath hot against my ear. “You’re trembling, Ivy. Is it fear…” His hand traced my arm, deliberate and claiming. “…or anticipation?”

I swallowed. “Both.” His smirk was dark satisfaction. Lucien didn’t give me long to think. He pressed me against the glass, the city glittering behind me, his mouth descending on mine. His hunger rolled over me, heat and command tangled in one. His hands were everywhere, and his tongue was pure sensual magic. My mind spun. He tasted like fire and smoke and secrets. Gods, he’s going to ruin me.

His teeth nipped down my neck, lingering at the pulse fluttering there. His voice was low and dangerous. “I should be questioning you right now. Finding out what you know.” His teeth grazed my skin, not quite piercing it. “But all I want is to take you apart piece by piece until you beg me not to stop.” My knees weakened, and I clutched his lapels. I should have resisted, pushed back and asked him what he really is. But oh gods, he felt so good.

He lifted me easily, hands strong beneath my thighs, and pressed me up against the glass window. The penthouse blurred, and all I could see was him, Lucien. Somewhere in the back of my mind, my great-grandmother’s voice whispered: “Be careful with men who burn too hot. They’ll warm you first… then scorch you clean through.”

But I was already lost to the heat of his mouth and the terrible, thrilling promise in his eyes, oh goddess. I felt my pussy clench, hot liquid pooling between my thighs, and I grasped onto his wide shoulders. I eagerly grabbed at his hair in fistfuls and whispered, “Show me your worst. I’m yours tonight”.

He growled, and faster than I ever thought possible, he had me over his shoulder and across the room. Lucien placed me onto the couch with a firm, controlled urgency. My dress was over my head and discarded in a matter of seconds.
