Kael’s voice dropped to a gravelly, focused command. “Don’t just hold it, Ivy. Shape it. Focus on the intent of a sanctuary. Nothing gets in, and nothing leaks out. All three of us, weaving one single, unbreakable wall. Together.”

The shard pulsed faster, and warm energy ran through my hands and into my chest. I gasped softly as every flicker of light reflected in my wide green eyes. I could feel the subtle and electric brush of their energy against mine.

Lucien leaned closer, his amber eyes locked on mine as his grip on my arm tightened. In that moment, I realised it was not just the crystal I was connecting to. I was connecting to them. This was the relief and the power I had been craving, a jagged and beautiful alignment I never thought possible.

My mind raced. Was I ready for this? The fear was there, sharp and cold, but the hunger for this unity was louder. For the first time, I did not want to be just enough. I wanted all of this.

The shard thrummed, its light pulsing like a frantic heart. Violet jumped down from the counter, and I nearly stopped breathing.

She paced a slow, deliberate circle around the three of us, her tail puffed, her emerald eyes ablaze with a blinding, ethereal blue. A low, vibrating purr rumbled from her chest—a frequency that matched the shard note for note.

Holy goddess.

My chest seized in utter shock. Violet wasn't just watching us—she was warding us. With every step, she was pulling our wild, chaotic aura into her own body, locking the raw magic down so tight that not a single whisper bled past the living room rug. I stared at my cat, my jaw practically on the floor. She was my familiar, yet she was seemingly an absolute powerhouse. We were a trio surviving in the dark, but with her, we were completely untraceable.

I felt myself caught in a violent swirl of magic and heat. The friction of our combined wills sparked against the air. This was the raw and unfiltered vibration of the triad. The shard felt like a beating heart, and for the first time, I was the one controlling the rhythm.

Lucien’s thumb stroked my skin gently, grounding me even as the energy surged. Kael mirrored him, deliberately pressing his thumb into the back of my hand and sending a jolt up my spine. My breath hitched. It was dangerous and intoxicating and entirely ours.

Then, the shard’s light became blinding. It violently sucked the ambient light and sound out of the room until there was only the blue glow. The hum in my chest peaked, overwhelming my senses with a flood of information and power.

I gasped, my head snapping back as the shard forced a vision directly into my mind. The living room vanished, replaced by a void of ancient and swirling runes that burned like cold fire. A chilling, resonant whisper sliced through my thoughts, sounding like the grinding of tectonic plates.

The Ancient Mother wakes. The debt is due.

A sharp and searing pain tore through my hands. It was the violent surge of my own magic trying to reject the intrusion. The connection snapped like glass. The shard instantly went dark and silent, falling cold on the table as if it had never been alive.

The stitching collapsed as the magic recoiled. I was thrown back, my body trembling violently, while my breath came in ragged hitches. The sudden silence was deafening.

Kael’s arms were around me before I could hit the floor. He pulled me against his chest, his hands moving frantically over my arms and face to check for injuries. “Ivy! Little red! Look at me. Are you hurt? Are you burned?”

Lucien was on his knees beside us, his amber eyes frantic as he grabbed my hands to inspect the slight smoke rising from my palms. “Stay with us, Ivy. Breathe. Tell me you’re okay?”

I could only cling to them, my heart hammering a furious rhythm against their chests. The scent of burnt flesh clung to my skin, my hands still stinging from the discharge.

“I’m okay,” I managed to whisper, though my voice was thin. “But it spoke to me. It said the Ancient Mother wakes. It said the debt is due.”

Kael and Lucien shared a look of pure, unadulterated dread. We had successfully opened a door, but the whisper in my head made one thing chillingly clear. We were not the ones in control of who walked through it.

Cards on the Table

The living room felt smaller now, the air still heavy with a sharp, metallic scent and the fading echo of the Ancient Mother’s whisper. Lucien sat on the edge of the coffee table with my hands cradled in his. He was focused, his amber eyes tracing the faint red spiderwebs of magical fatigue on my palms. Beside him, Kael held a bowl of cool, herb-infused water while his large thumb traced a grounding rhythm over my wrist.

As Lucien murmured a low, tonal shifter chant, a soothing warmth bled from his skin into mine and began knitting the microscopic tears in my magic. The stinging subsided, replaced by a deep and heavy thrum of belonging.

I sipped the tea Kael handed me, trying to focus on the warmth of the porcelain, but my mind refused to cooperate. The memory of our morning together, the absolute surrender of the stitching, and the way they were both looking at me now, as if I were the centre of their universe, made my stomach flutter. I was not a girl who spiralled. I was a sentinel, strong and mature, but this was uncharted territory. I needed to know if these two ancient alphas were willing to share a throne or if I was merely a temporary port in their storm.

I set the cup down, the steam veiling my face for a heartbeat. I looked at the two men—one refined and elegant, the other raw and primal—and I realised that the fracture between them was the only thing keeping us from being whole.

“We need to talk,” I began, my voice steady despite the nervous energy vibrating in my chest. “About the three of us. About everything. This isn't about what happened in the shop or here. It’s more. We are more.”

I paused, letting my gaze flick between them. Lucien’s eyes were steady and unreadable, while Kael’s dark stare sharpened, assessing me with that predatory focus I was beginning to crave.

“I know we all feel it,” I continued, my heart thudding against my ribs. “The chemistry is a forest fire, but this is not just about the heat for me. I feel a tether to both of you. A real one. We can't keep ignoring the proverbial elephant in the room.” I took a deep breath, the words finally tumbling out. “How do you feel about this being more? A throuple? A long-term alignment? I mean, if that is even something you would want after centuries of seeing how fickle the world can be.”

Violet wove a complex figure-eight around all three of our ankles. Her fur brushing against us felt as if she were physically tying our energies together. She looked up at me then, her silver eyes wide and startlingly bright, as if she were waiting for me to catch on.

I felt a moment of vulnerability, suddenly feeling very small, but thanks to Violet, I felt a surge of strength. “Do we need ground rules? Would you even consider being in a relationship together with me, as a unit? Or is this just an arrangement where you take turns while the other looks away? Because I do not think I can look away from either of you anymore.”
