Edie nodded happily, getting back to work.
“I can take Milo,” Summer said, holding her hands out for the baby.
My mother didn’t flinch. “He’s fine here. You need a break. My hedonistic children should be looking after you better.”
“Oh no! They’re looking after me amazingly, I promise,” Summer rushed to say.
And then the door was opening and Gabbie, Noah’s mom, walked in. Apparently, we were going to be having a family dinner whether we liked it or not. I shook my head as Gabbie set her stuff down and came into the kitchen, greeting Mom and Edie with hugs.
“Hello,” she said brightly, smiling at Summer. “You must be our sons’ mate. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Still, I am curious how all this happened.”
“Ha!” Edie called out. “Us too!”
“I don’t understand, you had a whole relationship without telling us!” Mom was back to questioning, and I knew it wasn’t going to stop until we gave her something to assuage her curiosity. “When did you guys meet? I simply cannot wait for Emmett and Noah to get here to tell us.”
Summer shot us a pleading look, and Marshall decided to put her out of her misery. “Mother. Relax. This is all still very new. We met Summer through a matchmaking service.”
Hattie’s mouth dropped open. “Oh my! You mean like those links I was sending you last year?”
I chuckled. “Yes, Ma. Exactly like those. And before you ask any more questions, yes, we are legally bonded. Summer is our omega, and that is not changing. She’s here for good, but let’s give her some time to ease into this. Okay?”
Our mother stared at me for a moment, clearly letting my words sink in. “Okay, then. You take the baby, Tobias. Marshall, help Edie make the food. Summer, you take a seat. Once we’ve eaten, we’ll have to talk about you joining our poker club at the bed-and-breakfast!”
Just like that, we had our orders.
Chapter 24
Summer
Ihad come to the conclusion that I both adored and was mildly terrified of my new mothers-in-law. They had taken over dinner with a scary precision, and before I even realized what was happening, I was sitting at a table being fed delicious lasagna while the mothers asked a million questions.
I had been spared the majority of the inquisition by Marshall expertly deflecting or answering questions himself.
“Okay, boys, you know how to clean dishes,” Hattie instructed, pushing the alphas back toward the kitchen. It was amusing to watch these big alphas being bossed around by their tiny mothers.
“Now, Summer, don’t you even think about helping them,” Gabbie insisted.
“Milo is already down, I can—”
“Nope.”
My son had fallen asleep before I had even finished my plate of food, so Hattie had whisked him away and put him to sleep in his nursery.
“We are going to head off, it’s getting late, but you, my dear, need to make it an early night while these boys clean up.”
I didn’t dare fight with them, especially when Marshall nodded in agreement while washing dishes.
So, doing as I was told, I went upstairs, checking on Milo in his crib. Once I knew he was fine, I changed into a pair of pajamas and crawled into bed.
By the time Emmett came to bed, I was already drifting off to sleep. It had become a habit to have him with me at night. I was actually quite fond of our little routine. I had always been so particular about how I slept that I assumed I would never be able to enjoy sharing a bed with an alpha. I was a big fan of cuddles, but sleeping in the same vicinity as a man had sounded unappealing.
Then Emmett happened.
Having my bonded alpha sleep with me was like crack. It did something to me internally I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It made me feel safe, protected, and loved. It was easy to fall asleep with him there, and he never disturbed me, even when he rolled over in the night and his hand found its way around my waist.
“Hey,” I whispered, facing Emmett with my eyes only barely open.
“Little Man has been grumpy lately, hasn’t he?” Emmett said as he slid into bed, that rich apple pie scent following him and invading my senses in the best way.
