Yup, I could definitely get used to this.
Chapter 19
Summer
We fell into a little routine pretty quickly. After making those cookies, the fridge was suddenly stocked with everything I could possibly need for baking. The guys insisted that I didn’t need to clean, but with just me and Milo in the house during the day, it felt too quiet. Having something to do kept me distracted, and leaving the house with him wasn’t always an option, especially with his teeth making him grumpy.
“Okay, little man, what’s the plan for today?” I asked, wiping the smashed banana off my son’s face. He had been considerably happier since Tobias had gotten him the teething medication, but I definitely had to be on top of it. It didn’t last very long. The fact that he even considered my son's comfort had made me warm up to him immediately.
While Milo babbled, I checked my calendar. The familiar notification popped up, and I paused, my heart rate increasing while my stomach clenched.
I needed to refill my heat suppressants.
In the initial contract, I had asked for time to get to know the guys before going through a heat, so they knew I was on them. I hadn’t considered that I would need to find a nearby pharmacy, because I previously used the clinic on campus. I hadn’t looked at all, and now I knew I really needed to. I could have just asked Tobias, given his job, but it felt weird asking my now mate to get me my medication.
The first few days had been used to get to know my new home, but it was time for me to venture out and explore Willow Grove on my own, at least somewhat.
“It looks like we have a little mission for today. How about we go to the library and get you some books too?” I said, scooping up my son. He chattered happily, simply content to be near me. “I think they have toys there too. That'll be fun. And picking up a prescription shouldn’t take too long.”
We got ready in record time. I grabbed one of the few sundresses I owned that wasn’t tattered and my most comfortable pair of sandals.
As I grabbed Milo’s diaper bag, I picked up my phone and searched for the pack group chat. Should I inform the guys that I was going out? They had taken to coming home early to see me, and if they returned to find me not there, they would likely be concerned. Or would I simply be annoying them by telling them about my every move?
Shaking my head, I decided that one text wouldn’t hurt. They were my pack, after all, not my keepers, but I also wanted to be respectful.
Summer
I’m going to explore town today and maybe go to the library and pick up some books for Milo. I just wanted to let you guys know!
My message was simple and to the point. Noah’s reply came first.
Noah
There’s a bakery next to the library that has amazing goodies! Make sure you check it out.
Summer
Aren’t you supposed to be teaching right now?
Noah
Shh, I have them taking a pop quiz.
I laughed, rolling my eyes as I gathered everything and started for the door.
Summer
Ahh, you’re being a meanie today. Got it.
Noah
It means I can text you, so I’m fine with that.
I smiled to myself, putting down the phone and heading out of the house. We had car seats in each vehicle now, but I didn’t have a car myself. I hated that the idea of getting one for me was sounding more and more necessary. I really hoped that Marshall could find one that was cheap.
Fortunately, the library was only a twenty-minute walk away, but with no stroller, Milo was starting to feel heavy in the carrier. Another item to add to the list. Still, it was worth it.
We walked inside the blissfully air-conditioned building, and I brought Milo over to the play area for babies and toddlers. There were brightly colored toys, including foam blocks that he loved, puzzles, and print-outs of pictures to color with the oversized crayons. It was sweet and cozy, and there were more than enough children’s books to choose from.
