I took another step, the door only a few feet away. “Everything’s fine.”

It wasn’t. Nothing about this was fine.

I turned on my heel and made a quick escape before he could ask me anything else.

Chapter Fourteen

Rowan

I did my best to distract myself after the group session, but nothing worked. I kept turning everything over, trying to make sense of it.

Was I losing my mind? Had I imagined the whole encounter?

But if I had, how had Logan gotten the hickey? More importantly, I knew what my body felt like after sex, and I’d had it last night.

What I needed was someone I could ask. Someone who had a habit of lurking in the corner of my room at night. I’d woken that morning hoping he hadn’t seen anything. Now, as I returned to my room and closed the door behind me, I hoped for the opposite.

“Caligo?”

He hadn’t come when I’d called the previous day, and I still didn’t know whether he could even hear me when he was somewhere else. I kept trying, calling his name three or four times.

When I finally turned, he was there and I almost jumped out of my skin. He’d adopted the more human appearance again, although no one could have mistaken him for an actual man.

“I was beginning to think you were ignoring me,” I said.

“I’m not ignoring you.”

Christ. That voice affected me every time, sending a pulse of awareness through parts of my body that had no business getting involved in this conversation.

“Last night,” I said. “Something happened in this room. The doctor came in here and we…” I couldn’t think of the right word. “Things happened between us.”

“Things?” Caligo asked.

Was he smiling? I got the distinct impression that he was. “Sexual things.”

“What kind of sexual things? Did you let the doctor touch you? Did you let him kiss you? Did you let him put his fingers and cock inside you? Did you touch him back? Did you let him come inside you?”

He was playing with me. I was certain of it now, although I didn’t understand the game. I lifted my chin defiantly, refusing to act embarrassed. “Yes, to all of that. It’s what humans do. You probably wouldn’t understand.”

“I understand.”

“Only today he’s acting as though he has no memory of it. I thought you might have seen something last night. I guess I was just hoping you could reassure me I’m not crazy.”

“You’re not crazy.”

“So you saw something?” Despite my best efforts, heat crept into my cheeks.

“In a manner of speaking.”

“You saw the doctor in my room?”

“Yes.”

“So why is he pretending it never happened? And how is he such a convincing actor? He should be picking up awards because I completely believed him.”

“The doctor remembers nothing about last night. He slept like a baby.”

I shook my head. “No. I considered sleepwalking, but it doesn’t fit. His eyes were open, and he spoke to me. Besides, sleep sex just isn’t a thing.”
