“Tahquamenon Falls isn’t Niagara,” Gage said as he looked at pictures over Jenna’s shoulder. “But it’s pretty damn impressive. The second largest waterfall east of the Mississippi after Niagara.”
“It was stunning for me,” Jenna told him. “I’ve never been to Niagara or any of the huge waterfalls.”
“You’ve never seen Yosemite Falls?” Seth asked curiously.
Jenna shook her head. “I’ve never been to that area of California. I’d really like to go. I’d like to see Redwood National Park, too. I haven’t done much. My twenties weren’t very adventurous. I spent most of my time working and going to school.”
“We’ll go,” I told her.
I’d never explored the national parks in California, but I’d like to, especially now that I could share it with Jenna.
Thinking about her life made me really think about our age difference for the first time.
Okay, eight years wasn’t a crazy gap, but I hadn’t spent the first decade of my adult life doing nothing but studying and working.
Yeah, I’d been in the military, but I’d had leave and free time.
She really hadn’t experienced much except school and study.
Becoming an astrophysicist had been a long road for her, even with her gifted status.
Jenna took her blogging very seriously, so any extra time had been put into producing quality writing for her blog.
Hell, I really hated how isolated she’d been and how hard she’d had to work to be successful completely on her own and despite her history.
“You saw some Yooperlites,” Nate observed as he looked at the photos on her phone.
“My pictures aren’t great,” she told Nate. “They’re not easy to capture on a phone, but I brought some home.”
Jenna held up her arm to show off the cheap Yooperlite beaded bracelet I’d bought her at a souvenir place near Pictured Rocks.
I grinned because she wore it proudly, the same way another woman would show off an expensive diamond bracelet.
Honestly, it was pretty plain and boring as the beads were only colorful under UV light, but she didn’t seem to care.
“That’s all the pictures I have,” Jenna said with a sigh as she put her phone back into her pocket. “But I have a lot of memories. The entire trip was amazing.”
“It’s a wild, untouched, natural beauty that we’re lucky to have so close,” Seth said. “It’s an escape I need sometimes.”
I was surprised to hear Seth admit that he welcomed the escape and solitude sometimes.
I’d never heard him talk about it with anyone else but our team.
My friends had definitely accepted Jenna as part of our family, and it made me damn grateful that I had some extraordinary brothers in my life.
Yeah, they were a pain in the ass sometimes, but every one of them had a good heart beneath their gruff bravado.
“Brock told me that you all know the details about my history,” Jenna said to my team. “That made me a little uncomfortable at first, but maybe it will help you understand my quirks.” She looked at Seth. “I understand the need to escape more than you think.”
To give my guys credit, they all looked embarrassed that they’d read every detail of Jenna’s history.
“It was a huge invasion of your privacy,” Nate admitted ruefully. “But it’s something that has to happen.”
Jenna shot Nate a smile that made my gut ache.
Fuck!
Nate was my brother.
