I strode out of the conference room, up the stairs, and out the front door.

I took a deep breath as I stepped outside and headed toward my house.

Nate, Gage, Seth, and I all lived close to each other. Unless the weather was bad, I didn’t bother to use one of my vehicles to get to their homes.

Today, the weather was perfect.

Early September was my favorite time of year in Cherry Cove, Michigan. The beach tourists were gone from the small beach town on Lake Michigan, and it was still warm enough to enjoy being outdoors.

I wasn’t a native of Michigan, but this town felt more like home than any other location I’d ever lived in. I didn’t regret following my Delta Force brothers here after I’d left the military.

Gage was the native Michigander.

Since the rest of us had very little blood family that we wanted to claim, we’d decided to put down roots here in Michigan with Gage.

We were all brothers in the only ways that really counted, and I couldn’t imagine any of them not being an important part of my life and my family, even after we’d all been discharged from the army.

I couldn’t complain.

I had a great life here, and there was no place I’d rather be.

I had a lucrative career…

A nice home…

Money to do whatever I wanted…

And being part of Last Hope made it possible for me to keep doing something that was important to me outside of the army.

Yeah, it occasionally sucked that my participation in Last Hope had to remain a secret from everyone except my Last Hope brothers, but it wasn’t like I wanted some kind of committed relationship.

That would be complicated, and I didn’t do complicated.

I liked to keep things as simple as possible.

Even if I wanted some kind of relationship, which I didn’t, maintaining a serious relationship wasn’t going to work with my lifestyle.

At the age of forty, I was more than content with the life I had.

I picked up my pace and started to jog toward my house, eager to get this mission accomplished and done.

Fuck! It was time to get our asses in gear and get Jenna Moran out of danger.

Once she was safe, there would be absolutely no reason for her to take up space in my head anymore.

Chapter 3

Jenna

Istartled as the door slammed closed across the room, abruptly yanking me out of a fitful sleep.

“Get up!” Rico snarled. “I’m getting you cleaned up now so we can leave early tomorrow. The boss is eager to see his new acquisition.”

My eyes fluttered open, and I had to squint into the bright light coming from the flashlight he was holding.

Damn!

I hadn’t expected to see my captor this evening.
