My heart was beating so fast that I could barely breathe.

“My place Thursday,” he said. “Come right after work. We’re going to talk. I’ll take care of dinner.”

My legs nearly gave out as he slowly backed away.

I took a deep breath as I watched Nate walk out the door, disappointment gnawing in my belly.

I should have been glad that he didn’t go to a place we couldn’t go, but I felt ridiculously…empty.

I didn’t think that Nate was still interested in dating me, but every so often, I felt a spark of attraction between the two of us.

It’s probably wishful thinking.

I straightened my shoulders and tried to remind myself that Nate was my friend.

And…he might finally be ready to tell me the truth about the secret part of his life that I didn’t know about.

It’s better that he didn’t kiss me.

That would have made our relationship complicated, and my life was already complicated enough.

I had to keep Nate Davis at a safe distance, but unfortunately, that was getting harder and harder every day.

Eight Months Later…

“Can I look now?” I asked Brock in an amused voice.

He was currently leading me out to the backyard with my eyes covered by a silk scarf that I rarely used.

Something had been going on outside for months, but whatever was being done had been concealed by privacy screens.

I’d promised Brock that I wouldn’t snoop, and I hadn’t.

Yeah, I’d been tempted, but I didn’t want to spoil whatever surprise he was planning.

Honestly, I didn’t really need another gift or surprise.

My life was so full and so happy that I could barely contain that happiness most of the time.

My home had sold quickly. I’d had to return to California for one more lecture in January, and I’d gone back soon after that for my cosmetic surgery.

I wouldn’t see the final appearance of the scar for a few more months, but it was already greatly improved.

I was doing laser for some of my other scars that bothered me, and I was pleased with the results.

I was never going to be able to completely erase my scars or my past, but I could make damn sure they were nearly irrelevant and in the rearview mirror for me.

I was never going to let those things touch my beautiful new life.

I could tell when we hit the lawn because the ground was softer under my feet.

We were almost there.

I knew whatever he was doing was just beyond the lawn. There was no fencing, and Brock owned property well beyond the grass.
