His expression softens immediately. He knows exactly which daughter I mean. Artemis has always been our shared weakness.

“I knew she was special the moment she was born,” I admit.

Lucan smiles. “Yeah…”

“She barely cried. Just glared at the doctor.”

“One of the proudest days of my life.”

I snort. “Most judgmental newborn I’ve ever met. Yet, she was perfect.”

His gaze warms. “She still is.”

My heart squeezes.

That’s another thing about Lucan. He’s never tried to change our daughter. Not once. While I worry, while doctors worry, while teachers worry, Lucan simply looks at Artemis and sees exactly what she is.

Extraordinary.

“I spent years afraid the world would hurt her heart,” I whisper.

His thumb brushes over my wedding band. “And now you’re not?”

I smile.

“Now I worry she’ll hurt the world.”

We both laugh because we know it’s true. Our youngest isn’t fragile. She’s ice, and she’s perfectly capable of destroying anyone foolish enough to underestimate her.

“Damn right. That’s my baby.”

“Nonsense. She’s all me.”

Lucan raises an eyebrow.

I grin.

We both know Artemis is her own person, unlike either of us in some ways and frustratingly like me in others.

“Do you think she’ll be angry when she realizes I meddle in her life?”

My husband, the traitor, laughs.

“Dear wife.”

“Annoying husband.”

“Of course she’ll be angry.”

I sigh. “You’re supposed to support me.”

“I do. Always.”

“Then lie to me.”

“Never.”

I pinch his side, but he barely reacts. The man survives an abusive father and organized crime. My attitude isn't going to frighten him.
