“Something like that.”
The doors slide open, revealing a dark hallway illuminated by tiny lavender lights.
“Stephen, what is this?”
He squeezes my hand. “Do you hear that, love?”
I listen.
It sounds like… water.
I look at him, utterly confused.
“Keep walking.”
I do.
And then the hallway opens.
My breath catches.
Jellyfish.
Thousands of them drift above and around us inside an enormous underwater tunnel, glowing silver, white, and lavender against the darkness. They look like stars trapped beneath the ocean.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
My mind goes quiet, but my heart is creating a storm.
Stephen leads me closer to the glass, and I watch a cluster of moon jellyfish float past.
“This is…”
“Perfect,” he murmurs.
I turn toward him, but he’s not looking at the jellyfish.
He’s looking at me, wearing the sweetest smile I’ve ever seen.
“Are you happy, Artemis?”
My throat tightens.
“I’ve never been this happy.”
And it’s true.
He squeezes my hand and drops a quick kiss on my nose.
“That’s all I want for you, my sweet little nightmare.”
Before I can answer, his phone clicks.
I turn. “Did you just take a picture of me?”
