Meanwhile, I’m still trying to convince my heart that it doesn’t need to evacuate my body after being scared half to death.

“What is wrong with you?” I demand. “Do you have a fetish for scaring people?”

One dark eyebrow lifts. “A lot of things are wrong with me, actually.”

I stare at him in disbelief because I don’t like that answer.

Mostly because it’s funny and I hate that I find it funny even more.

“You startled me again.”

“You were trespassing again.”

I roll my eyes at that. “I was looking around.”

“In my library.”

I cross my arms, still clutching the book against my chest.

“You’re a mediocre host. Now I can’t even come to the library? What do you expect me to do? Stay in my room and die of boredom?”

He shrugs. “Not a horrible way to go. It actually suits your personality?”

Something in my chest shifts and this time, it stings. “And what exactly is that supposed to mean?”

His expression doesn’t change. “That you have the personality of a glacier.”

A glacier.

Well, now that’s a compliment.

I lift my chin. “I wish I could say that you have a personality. But after only two days, my pet fish is more interesting.” And that’s saying something, considering Eloise barely moves. The little lazy anarchist.

His mouth twitches and his brown eyes sparkle with something I can’t name.

So, naturally, I keep goin. “How your fans find you remotely interesting is beyond me.”

He tilts his head. “Seems like you know more about me than you’re letting on, princess.”

He did not just imply that I’m a fan.

“Sorry to disappoint you, Khaos, but my music taste goes beyond what someone like you can produce.”

Lie.

The obnoxious voice in my head immediately whispers. I mentally shove it into a locked room.

“I was right.”

I raise a brow. “About what?”

“You do bite.”

I frown.

Ugh.

That stupid little grin does something strange to my stomach.
