She rested her forehead against my chest. “Invisible?”
“You’re going to fuck them up.”
CHAPTER 19
Brittney
Fucking up fairies was not what I saw myself doing in the afterlife. But way better than sitting on clouds and playing the harp, that was for sure.
Kiam brought me down to his ritual room and gave me specific instructions, or ideas, really, and then said he was going to take me through the tunnels.
“Are you listening or are you drooling over the chamber?”
My face heated. “I’m listening, I swear, but you have to admit this is awesome.”
There was a real circle on the floor, marked by symbols and surrounded by candles. There was a table full of cool shit—including a dagger I would have maimed and killed for, to get my hands on it.
Dagger.
Devil.
Huh.
“I thought they were bad, though. My friend Carmen said to stay away from the tunnels. Well, she’s not really my friend, per se. I literally just met her.”
The night my friend Vance got me that tarot reading seemed like it was a million years ago, but I couldn’t deny the coincidences. My brain felt all swirly as I tried to listen to Kiam and reconcile the similarities, while also trying to line up everything I had to do in my head.
Kiam took my hand and started walking. “I’ll keep you safe, don’t worry.”
He waved a hand at me, and a black hoodie, leggings, and boots appeared on my body. “Holy shit is that convenient. You need to teach me that.”
He grinned at me. “It is. Saves me time with my makeup when I’m in a rush.”
“So, you could put me in some sick black lace and velvet gown if I asked? With lots of jewels? Or what about some cute little sexy outfit with a short puffy skirt or something? And knee-high stockings?”
His eyes were hooded when he glanced at me, and I could see him thinking. “Next time. Get me results and I’ll see what I can do.”
The asshole smirked at me and my core clenched. Leave it to me to get all hot and bothered right before I was about to fuck with deadly Fae.
“You dressed me in my daily uniform,” I pointed out. My heart thumped and I pressed my lips together.
“I figured it was what you wanted; you’d be comfortable.” His gaze softened as he dragged his eyes up and down my body. “Does it feel okay?”
Nodding, I said, “Yeah. Thank you.”
“We’re going to go over there.” He pointed across the room. “It’s deep and it’s dark, but I’ll hold you.”
My legs buckled and he caught my elbow. Deep dark. “Have you ever had a tarot reading?”
Kiam laughed. “Not in hundreds of years. I do use crystal balls to watch people. I don’t check my own fortune because I make it with every breath I take. Why?”
“No reason.” He was guiding me across the floor, keeping a firm grip on me. “Well, my friend, Vance,” Kiam’s grip tightened, “he got me a tarot reading right before your trap killed me. It's turned out to be strangely accurate.”
We stopped at the mouth of the indoor cave, and he looked at me, intrigued. “How so?”
“The lady was weird. She kept using words that all started with the same letter and now those words keep figuring into my life. Like a premonition, it was. Or something.”
His gaze was intense. “Did she mention me?”
