“The comments are insane,” Rowan says. “But in a good way. Please, go read them.”

“Okay.” I give in and read a couple of them quietly to myself. So much for getting dressed this morning. I crawl back under the covers and prop myself up with pillows at my back.

Is this really their first date or do they know each other?

Sparks flying.

That chemistry is undeniable. They must already be dating!

They make a cute couple. Imagine what their babies would look like.

“Wow.”

“I know, right? Everyone loves the two of you together. So, how did the date actually go?” Rowan asks.

“We got stuck in the elevator on the way home.”

“What happened? You have to tell me everything!” Rowan squeals. “Oh! Or better yet, I’ll just come over.”

“I’m still in my pajamas.”

“Do you think I care?” Rowan asks.

Of course, she doesn’t. She’s spent the night countless times after partying together. There’s a knock at my front door.

I climb off the mattress and patter to the front door. “Seriously, Rowan, if you’ve been outside my building waiting for me to wake up…” I grumble at her through the phone and yank back the door.

Myles stands on the opposite side. He’s fully dressed for the day. Me? I’m in boxers that barely cover my bottom cheeks and a tank top that is too sheer for anyone else to see. Doesn’t matter that it’s winter, I keep the house toasty.

My arm immediately flies up to cover my chest, although it’s obvious Myles is already letting his eyes wander down my body. “I have to go, Rowan. Myles just showed up.” I hang up on my bestie before even hearing her say goodbye. “Quit staring. I wasn’t expecting visitors.”

“Can I come in?” Myles asks, and I realize he’s holding a bag from the local bagel place in town and a tray with two cups of coffee.

“You brought me breakfast.” I’m not sure what to think, let alone say. I stare at him, dumbfounded.

He walks inside, even though I don’t exactly invite him in, and he places the tray of coffee on the kitchen counter.

“You don’t even know how I take my coffee.”

“You’re right. There’s one black coffee and one that’s super fucking sweet. I’m really hoping you like yours sugary.”

“Which one is black?” I ask, going for it.

Myles inhales sharply and offers me the black coffee. I swear he’s pouting. I remove the lid and open my fridge, grabbing my favorite flavored marshmallow creamer.

“You’re cruel,” Myles grumbles at me. “You’re adding that to the black coffee?”

“Why are you really here?” I ask, cocking my head to the side, wanting to know what he’s up to, because Myles Dax doesn’t show up and bring me coffee or breakfast. “Tell me the truth and you can have the black coffee.”

He exhales heavily; a sigh leaves his lips, and it’s obvious he isn’t here to woo me.

One date together didn’t change anything between us. It was a nice night out, pleasant company, most of the time. And he did keep my mind occupied while we were trapped in the elevator. When the lights shut off and the elevator car stopped, I began to have a panic attack.

Myles didn’t make fun of me.

He didn’t laugh.

He distracted me and made the evening memorable.
