“What the hell you looking for?”
She jumped slightly before standing up and looking over her shoulder at me.
“Damn, you just be sneaking up on people?”
“I’m in my own fucking kitchen. How am I sneaking?”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. I was looking for something to drink.”
“You been damn near halfway inside my refrigerator all this time looking for something to drink?”
“Well, I don’t know where you keep shit.”
I looked at her, then at the refrigerator.
“It’s a refrigerator, ma. Where the hell else would they be?”
She looked at me, sucked her teeth, then rolled her eyes. She leaned back down in the fridge and finally found a bottle of water.
“So, ma, tell me something.”
She twisted the cap off the water and looked at me. “What?”
“What you got going outside of all this shit?”
“I work—”
Before she could finish, my phone went off again. I went back to the living room, grabbed it, and checked the caller ID. It was my pops.
I didn’t feel like talking to this nigga right now. Far as I was concerned, we didn’t have shit to talk about.
I took a breath before sliding the button over and putting the phone to my ear.
“Yeah, bruh.”
“Yeah, bruh?” he repeated.
“Yeah, you heard me. What you want?”
“I was calling to make sure you made it home and see if you still had that girl over there with you.”
“Yeah, I made it home, and yeah, she’s still here.”
My eyes shifted toward shorty by the counter. I didn’t know where the fuck his old ass was going with this, but I needed him to hurry up and get to the point.
“Son, you know why I called you down to the warehouse, right?”
My brows pulled together. “Why?”
“Because I wanted to check on you and make sure you were good. I hadn’t heard from you in a while.”
I damn near laughed. I didn’t believe that shit for a minute. Whenever my father did something, there was always a reason behind it. Nothing with this nigga was ever as simple as I just wanted to see you.
“You do know I don’t believe that shit, right?”
“I know you don’t, but it’s the truth.”
“Pops, cut the act. You called me down there because you wanted me to see shorty.”
